Download a program called nLite and use that to strip down your Windows XP CD of any programs/drivers/features/services you don't want or need. You can get a very slim version of windows that uses less memory than normal that way.

I desoldered the transformer for the backlight and the major short that was causing the voltage to go to 0 across the input disappeared! :shock: :D

The LM1881 is a video sync separator which the rest of the circuitry probably relies on for sync information so I don't think you can bypass it.
