Yobo SuperPad in Xbox 360 Controller

Post by Zoon0n »

Okay, so I was recently introduced to the Nintendo 64 - not sure how I managed to miss it during my childhood, but nonetheless - I fell in love with everything.. except of course the N64 joystick. I've got 4 controllers, some with great joysticks, others with terrible ones, and I looked into replacing them - however, after a little benheck.com research, I discovered N64 joysticks aren't standard in their construction, and I was going to have to snag a 3rd party controller if I wanted to do the Gamecube joystick mod (or any other joystick for that matter).

I've always been a fan of the Xbox 360 controller, and was hoping to find a 3rd party controller that was similar in design for the N64 - I failed (side note: if you know of one, please let me know! It'd save me a lot of time, energy, and trouble). So I thought that I might mash a Yobo SuperPad inside the shell of a 360 controller. For those of you that wonder how it look, here is a grotesque mock up in Paint:

*note - I might keep the A button from the Game Cube as is and make the right trigger B, haven't decided yet

Of course, before I jump into a project like this, I thought I'd run it by you benheckers to see if it could be done, and also to ask what would need to be done. I am a complete noob. I know how to solder, but I've never had to cut up a control board or map buttons to new locations, all of which I thought I'd present to you.

Could I do it? Scale of 1-10 how difficult would you estimate this project to be?
What do I need? I've got a soldering iron, solder, dremel, basic tool set, anything else special (I know I'll need a Gamebit to crack the 360 controller)
Can I use the Xbox 360 joystick? Or should I go with a Game Cube one?

Sorry if my idea is a waste, if this post was convoluted, etc. I'd just like whatever feedback you've got.

It should be to hard, if you use a wired 360 controller. If I may suggest a different setup though...

Code: Select all

Xbox 360                  N64
=======================================
Left Joystick     -->     Joystick
D-pad             -->     D-pad
Right Joystick    -->     C buttons
A                 -->     A
B                 -->     B
X                 -->     Turbo A
Y                 -->     Turbo B
Back              -->     Start
Start             -->     Start
Xbox Button       -->     Start
LB                -->     Z
RB                -->     Z
LT                -->     L
RT                -->     R
Seems the most obvious/comfortable to me.

Actually that control scheme makes a lot of sense.. any thoughts on how I start? :D Seriously though I've never done anything like this. I'm pretty sure I'll have to hack up the SuperPad board (which scares the crap outta me), and what about converting the C buttons to a C stick? If there are any tutorials, etc. someone could point me to, I'd be a very happy man.

Both the 360 and GCN joysticks use potentiometers, so the mod should be exactly the same. The only thing that you will need from the SuperPad is the IC (the controller chip), and obviously the wires to go from controller to N64. Hooking up the 360 controller's buttons to the SuperPad IC should be fairly straightforward, as the majority of them are digital (or at least can pass for it). You will need to do some intermediate adjusting for the joystick and the left and right triggers, though...

have you considered the cube 64? http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php ... lit=cube64" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It allows you to use a gamecube controller on an n64. I've been trying to incorporate memory card support but I screwed over my computer with the serial port so no more pic programming for a while :(
