The new Mac Mini.
So, I just got one of these in the low-end configuration then upgraded the HDD and RAM myself. So far, I am surprised by it's performance. I thought it wouldn't be that great, but honestly, it's a very underrated machine (the new one with the Nvidia chipset). The new 9400 video is really doing quite well for midrange gaming as well. A lot of people are complaining about it being too expensive for what it is, but with the way mine's been performing with the new specs makes it feel quite justified.
2GHz Core 2 Duo
1066mhz FSB
1066mhz DDR3 SDRAM
SATA HDD and DL DVD burner
GeForce 9400M Video
All of this consumes 13W of power idling, 45W peak.
Discuss.
[In case you're interested, I saved up for this from doing work with my business, as well as a bit of birthday money. I also just got a free ThinkPad t40 and highly suggest you read my tutorial on fixing the video. I also sold my old kick-ass desktop for a 12" PowerBook G4 1.5GHz.]

Re: The new Mac Mini.
I never buy any prebuilt computers. You get mystery junk parts. If you build or get a custom-built computer, you can choose brand name stuff.

Re: The new Mac Mini.
I was considering getting one, but the price is simply too rich for such a computer. I'm buying an MSI Wind instead.
Re: The new Mac Mini.
Is this what you're talking about Skyone?
I've been thinking about making one myself, I've heard good things about them.

Why is it that every time I post in a thread, it dies?

Re: The new Mac Mini.
Hehe, that is the idea I'm referring to, ZN13. However, I just bought an MSI Wind netbook. I'm going to college next year, and it should replace the monotonous Macbooks that all of my mates will be carrying around.
Re: The new Mac Mini.
Yeah, I was thinking of going that route but with an EEEpc instead.

"Mystery junk parts"? I know exactly what parts are inside this, it's freely available information. I built a PC myself last summer; I sold it for quite a large amount a few days ago. I know what I'm buying.XCVG wrote:I never buy any prebuilt computers. You get mystery junk parts. If you build or get a custom-built computer, you can choose brand name stuff.

Yeah, I'd hardly say a Mac is made of "mystery junk parts." The logic board is custom-designed by Apple, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a name brand motherboard with the features it has packed into such a small size. If there's one thing I've learned about Apple it's that you get quality.Bibin wrote:"Mystery junk parts"? I know exactly what parts are inside this, it's freely available information. Re: The new Mac Mini.
exactly. Apple is one of the few companies still trying to make quality pieces of equipment, and they don't care how much it costs. They aren't trying to make it as cheap and easy to make as possible.

Hahahaha sure, it's not just because they want to take advantage of the market...eurddrue wrote:exactly. Apple is one of the few companies still trying to make quality pieces of equipment, and they don't care how much it costs. They aren't trying to make it as cheap and easy to make as possible.

Re: The new Mac Mini.
Haven't you ever heard the stories about the three tubes of thermal paste? Or actually FELT the case. These things are cheap garbage that they charge you an exhorbitant amount for, because it's a Mac. Apple stuff is not quality. It's probably because everything else is so cheap, people lack perspective now.Black Six wrote:If there's one thing I've learned about Apple it's that you get quality.
I'm sticking with my homebuilt PC.
Did I post that out loud?
EDIT: Okay, sorry about that rant. I don't like Macs, I think they are overpriced, and I am a really function over form person. (as my Ugly Voltage Regulator can attest)
