Its supposed to be a christian holiday called Shrove Tuesday, it signifies either the end or the start of lent (i forget which)
Its not really a major holiday anywhere near on the scale of mardi gras its just an excuse to eat pancakes really
its not even a national holiday, although it usually falls in the february half term break
EDIT: its just before Lent, it was historically the using up of all the rich ingredients like eggs, milk, sugar and flour before lent where you ate "plain" stuff
I hear it more called as fa Tuesday, Its the Tuesday before Ash Wensday. The first day of the lent'on season. And over this season your supposed to eat bland food and stuff. So you eat all your good food on that day. No one does anything with it anymore, accept use it as a ploy to go out to eat. Damn my dad being a pastor has rubbed some off this mindless facts onto me.
Pancake days rules, I make pancakes every year. Last year I made a guide to make the perfect pancakes my way. It can be viewed here on my blog if anyone who missed there fill of this great food on tuesday -
