If your HDD is clicking, then the reader is touching the HD head. That's not good at all (obviously) and means your HDD needs to be replaced ASAP!!! (just filling you in for future purposes)

But sparks too? Wow...that must have scared the living shizzle out of you.

 reminds me of one of the HDs I had in this computer a while back.

See, I had just gotten it, but it had no HD in it, so I threw in this old one I had in the garage. It was all dented on the top, and the "DO NOT REMOVE" labels were long gone. Surprisingly it worked, but about 60% of the drive was bad, so I had it formatted to 800MB. It worked fine, I could run a minimal Win98 install and Firefox on it, but that was all. (If I remember right, I signed up here with that HD)

However, after a couple weeks the drive wouldn't start. So I opened it up and reconnected a couple wires, and it worked just fine. It ran for another couple weeks with the platers spinning in the open air (that's right I didn't bother putting the HD covers back on! :P. Then my dad upgraded the compy in the workshop in the garage to a 160GB HD (so he could play all the digitized versions of his LPs and all the MP3s and CD copies on the kickarse stereo out there), and I recieved the old 40gb HD with the "broken" Windows 2000 install on it. So I plugged it in and booted it up, and it worked just fine! (turns out a couple drivers were corrupt) So I threw in some extra boards I had lying around and it works just fine. :D

And don't ask me about the problems I had with the optical drives... Oh well that's to be expected for a computer made from a bunch of junked/scavenged parts! :P

The price isnt bad. But damn what did you do to your computer? I cant image what you did to cause the computer to heat up enough to melt the cpu pins.
