If your HDD is clicking, then the reader is touching the HD head. That's not good at all (obviously) and means your HDD needs to be replaced ASAP!!! (just filling you in for future purposes)
But sparks too? Wow...that must have scared the living shizzle out of you.

See, I had just gotten it, but it had no HD in it, so I threw in this old one I had in the garage. It was all dented on the top, and the "DO NOT REMOVE" labels were long gone. Surprisingly it worked, but about 60% of the drive was bad, so I had it formatted to 800MB. It worked fine, I could run a minimal Win98 install and Firefox on it, but that was all. (If I remember right, I signed up here with that HD)
However, after a couple weeks the drive wouldn't start. So I opened it up and reconnected a couple wires, and it worked just fine. It ran for another couple weeks with the platers spinning in the open air (that's right I didn't bother putting the HD covers back on!
And don't ask me about the problems I had with the optical drives...

The price isnt bad. But damn what did you do to your computer? I cant image what you did to cause the computer to heat up enough to melt the cpu pins.
