backlighting the PSone screen has always been the trickiest part in dealing with using the screen.....the ccfl tube in there just uses up too much damn power.....and the top of the screen with the inverter takes up too much space....but what if there was a way to save power....and still have the ccfl backlight!!


well, look no further than a GC screen inverter circuit :P!!! a couple days ago my GCp V1.5's leds fried (they sucked...specs were all wrong...they didn't even run off 3.6V, like normally!!) and I was messing around with the ccfl backlight, trying to see if I could somehow still use that. I didn't have a psone screen board with the inverter circuit still intact, though, so I had to find something else.....hello old GC screen board....hey, what's this?!? an inverter circuit?!?!?

I tested it out, found out that it works fine with a 7.5V input, and proceeded to cut the circuit out of the pcb (actually, apart from the rest of the pcb ;)). anyway, so now I've got a ccfl backlight that only uses.....100mA of power :D!!!! (at 7.5V, of course ;))

soon I'll try and draw the actual circuit diagram (looks really simple, actually ;)) so anyone can build the circuit :D!!!

Are you the god of portables? That would make it easier for the people who don't want to LED mod their screen.

WHATT???!! 100ma? No way! How is that possible? This could mean much brighter screens and less work modding with leds! More information would be appreciated. :)

yeah, it definitely seems too good to be true, but since I know it works and have tested it, it must be true :P...think about it, though....the psone screen came out a while ago, so perhaps the inverter circuit technology wasn't as good as today....or maybe it's just because this inverter is bigger or something :P....either way, I know it works for sure :)

I'll try and get that circuit diagram done soon :)

But maybe it doesn't work. Maybe you just got an idea, so the light over your head went on, and it's making the CCFL look like it's lit.

You discovered the same lighting method that I used on my second SNESp- it works great doesn't it? I used an inverter from one of the CCFL's used for lighting up PC cases (It's a good place to find inverters). It lights up a small tube from another LCD I fried.

It consumes about 1/4 of the original backlight's power.

I discovered this a long time ago, but didn't really think about sharing it because everyone was hyped about the LED method.
If all else fails, take it apart!

Do you know how much the inverter outputs?
I found a nice and cheap inverter with a 2.5V - 5.5V input and a 1100V output ;)

well, I didn't want to have to open up the PDF and risk getting disappointed, but according to the datasheet it's .45Adc in and 5.4marms out :P
