I have a cool idea! SCOREBOARD! Someone care to help me?

Post by atkafighter »

I have the idea of building a scoreboard for my wall. I want it to have a timer, score for two teams (players), and spots for wins (three on each. For fighting games.), and to connect controllers so that the points can be awarded using the controllers (for frags or something). I think this would be pretty funny on my wall. I would use it to keep track of Tekken tournaments, and other gaming events (if I ever actually use it).
Here is a 5 second paint picture of what I want to build.

I bet this is way over my head, but hopefully some of you electro-geniuses can help me out.
I want it to be really big.
Any ideas?

For building that kind of scoreboard you could probably use a PIC16F876 microcontroller. You could probably multiplex some LED displays to it, and you're set! Just hope you have enough I/O lines left for the buttons :)

After watching 3 hours of pokemon with my little cousin, I found it ironic that someone would mention it. It really does look eerily similar

Well I want the numbers to be visible from pretty far away, but I also need to be able to move it (when I have to leave campus during breaks) by car. So I guess it would be something like 1.5ft tall, 3ft long, and about 4 inches deep. I should be able to rig it up on top of my light fixture (piece of junk). Also, how would I make it award a point only when two, or more people press a button at the same time (confirmation purposes, that way nobody cheats HA).
Where would I get the LCD's for this? I would need some large ones similar to the ones found in alarm clocks (only bigger).

I'd say either use a PIC, or use a serial adder and a sipo register (or even just a parallel adder)
Odds are that the PIC would be the easiest way though.
