A replacement would be exactly the same, Linux is not exactly like Windows.

I use Debian on my main computer, there isn't an install of Windows on any computer in my house. For me it has replaced Windows, but it isn't a replacement for everybody. It wasn't intended to replace anything, just be an alternative.

Also I can play WMV file just fine in Mplayer, Xine and VLC. WMV3 files don't play in VLC, but play fine in Mplayer and Xine using the win32codec pack from the Mplayer site.

The whole concept of open source software is to be an alternative to commercial software. It gives people choices they can choose to use it or choose to bash it, its their choice.

On a side note I just installed BeOS on my old Celeron 600 and it runs great, even has sound and internet. It also isn't a replacement for anything, it does its own thing and does it well.

I know it is only a clone, but if you listen to SCO (which I don't) it is a exact copy, which it is not. I say based because it is easier to understand where it came from. It is based on the design of Unix not based on the code of Unix.

Also, bicostp, if more people used Linux then hackers and virus writers would attack Linux. They don't attack Windows because it is easy they attack it because it is plentiful.

also the more popular versions of Linux have more security holes then windows xp stock

Very true, but if they are setup properly they are very secure.

Sitting behind my firwalled router, using properly configured iptables i feel pretty secure.

I mean anything setup properly is secure. If you have Windows you don't have iptables it is a *nix only kind of thing. I used to run Windows 2000 and never had a virus.

Sorry, misunderstanding, I thought that when you said 'they' you were referring to the post above yours which talked about the popular Linux distros. Also, IPTables is simply a program, the equivalent of Zonealarm or Windows Firewall on Windows...

I'm a second-year undergraduate doing a BCA + BCompSc, so I'm constantly moving between Windows, *Nix, and Mac machines... As you can imagine I frequently get caught up in arguments about which platform is better, and frankly I believe that they're all OK, but for different reasons.
