For a while, I've been thinking of a cabinet to hold multiple game systems, power them, and automatically switch the video to them when they are turned on. It would have to be modular though, because most people aren't going to have a Playstation/2, Sega Genesis, Master System, Saturn, (S,N64,)NES, GameCube, Xbox, Intellivision, Atari 800, 2600, 5200, 7600, Lynx, Jaguar, Bally Arcade, Commodore(s), and anything I missed. The modules would hold the system's power adapter, AV cords (probably built into the module itself) and a few controllers/paddles. It could even have an adapter that replicates all of the controller ports and has an extension similar to a audio snake. Any systems that have expansion bays/ports (that actually have devices) would be accounted for (the N64 one would have spacers to accomodate the extra height from the disk drive, the GameCube would have a space for you to insert the GameBoy player and game. The link cable port would be replicated. The GameCube, PS2 and Xbox modules would have ethernet and phone ports that would connect to the central port location. At the "central port location", there would be the obvious composite video, S-Video, RCA audio out, and the less common, component video, SCART, VGA, coaxial audio, and optical audio out. A surge protector with lighted switch and filtered line module complete the whole shebang. Power video and audio are all transferred through a connector in one of the legs of each module. It is a pass-thru connector and only one game system will function at a time. The only problem I see with the whole thing is that most TVs don't have a single input that will accept component, S-Video and composite, much less VGA and RGB. Stereos will usually accept all types of audio at the same time though. Any conversion would usually bypass Macrovision and people would probably exploit this glitch and the product, banned. The only solution would be to devote 2 inputs to the system and use an IR blaster. The best way to use an IR blaster in this situation is a small voice recorder and an IR diode. They work very well in this situation.
