17 pin help

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

17 pin help

Post by jeffslot »

Hello,

Any tips / advice for soldering the 17 pins. I'm having a difficult time getting enough solder on them without it touching another connection. THansk.

OK, I just wonderred what 17 pins you were talking about. Like I said, get some flux, because it REALLY helps with solderring. Also, are you experienced with solderring, or is this new to you?

you can just do wat i use and stick a Q-tip in lemon juice then cover the wire in it

it worked good as flux for me when i soldered to a controllor IC
when life gives you lemons make flux

I forgot that Turbo said lemon juice works equally well, but I have never tried it. Flux comes in a tube, and helps the solder stick to the pins and pads. Try either one.

Solderring 101:
The solder pen must touch and heat up both the pad and the wire.
The solder should be fed to the side opposite the pen, not to the pen itself.
It will simply melt when the surface it touches is hot enough.

Wow,

Amazing graphic. I will see if I can get that to work. Thanks.

make sure to heat up the wire and thing you're soldering it to so the solder will stick to them better

Nice diagram.

I prefer to melt some solder on the end of the wire, and then place it on the pin (or wherever) I am going to solder to. I then melt the solder thats on the wire. I find this stops the risk of frying the board (the N64 board anyway).

However, I think nos_slived's method is the better method, (it's the way my tech teacher taught us, but he said do it how you prefer), but I personally find my method easier adn less of a risk.

That works if you are solderring to something like a chip pin, but if you are solderring to a PCB pad, then the solder prevents the wire from going through the hole. I do like the way you do it though, and that is what I do when I'm not solderring to a PCB.
