An Idea for a Hack

Post by Shad0wR1d3r »

I know you guys are modding pros and probably don't care about simple hacks like that :P, but here's my idea - I've got a USB Headset lying around and the Xbox 360 one just isn't cutting it for me. So I was wondering if it was possible to cook up some sort of box that would let me plug in my USB headset, the Xbox 360 audio output cables (both) and my controller so I can have the functionality of the mic as well.

And if possible, all the ideas are appreciated

Thanks for the input :)

(I'm too cheap to buy turtlebeaches and I like the modding experience :))

Possible=Yes
Worth It=Probably

You can get a USB to line in Converter and make a Line in box for the Controller?

yes, but many cables hanging around, if you need help talk to me (But im not "Pro"), I made a wired screen and controller together setup in my xbox, but then needed it for a nesp.
What you could do is use a wired controller, and a VGA connectors from radio shack, so you have enough oins, and they can all be in one thick cable.

perhaps I wasn't too clear, so I've got a small drawing

excuse my poor drawing skills

Anyway so my idea is: I plug in Left and Right audio components from xbox 360, I plug in my USB headset, and I plug a wire comming from the box into the controller so I am able to use my headset with the xbox without destroing the it.

shouldn't be too mesy with cabling

You would need some way to encode audio from the analog sources to the digital usb source.
It's a lot more difficult than you would think.you would be better off just setting up a laptop or media server in your living room that did this -
USBMicrophone > Computer> 2.5mm Speaker OUT>2.5 ControllerMicrophone IN
USBHeadphone < Computer< RCA L/R IN< XboxRCA L/R OUT
USBHeadphone < Computer< 2.5 Speaker IN< 2.5 ControllerHeadphone OUT

so... that would mean i have to build a circuit that would take wave samples at the same frequency the xbox does (i assume the console converts the digital audio into analogue) then I have to find out how the sound is transmited to the headset using data+ and data- pins :s (any electrical engineers here?) I thought it might be little easier than that. i thing i just going to chop the headset itself removing the usb altogether in exchange for the standard stuff. Do you think that's possible, hopefully? I don't want to destroy the headset just to find out that it was all for nothing :s
P.S. can you imagine the suffering of typing this whole thing on a phone? XD

[EDIT]

Right... I just had a look at a pair of Turtlebeach X1s and what you have is Standard cables you would get from any headset plus USB (divided from one cable) ... which makes me confused :(

gonna disasemble the control box of my headset and I'll post what I got

[EDIT 2]

Haha! The workings of the headset are not as complicated as I thought!

I don't even need to mess with the USB part of the headset
take a look:

here's my headset

Image
here is the PCB from one side

Image
here is the other side of the PCB

I am only interested in this side cause that's where I can see the wires which are conveniently labeled :D

So my plan is to solder a stereo jack and a mono jack to the PCB as I have plenty of space where I can place them, and of course make some mods to the casing to fit the jacks.

Post what you think, I really appreciate guidance as the biggest mod I have ever done is installing a switch to the PS2 to fool the sensors lol

[Edit 3]

LOL I spoke too soon:

You could probably get away with just opening up the connector for the Xbox 360 mic that plugs into the controller. It seems that Mic you have encodes to USB on that USB board.

So all you would have to do is desolder the wires going to that USB Board and find out which way you need to solder them onto the Xbox 360 Mic Board.

This is just a theory, but it looks like it would work.
