EDIT: Why hello there page break. Fancy meeting you here.

The latest version of my ION handheld concept:

Image

Still finalizing the details, but the dimensions are pretty much set. It's big enough to hold, yet small enough to fit in a pocket comfortably.

Main features:
- 5" 1024x600 capacitive multi-touch OLED display
- 6.5" wide x 3.25" tall x .75" thick
- Nvidia GeForce 9400m chipset
- Either an Atom Z550 (2 ghz, 667 mhz FSB, 10w TDP) or one of the ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duos* (3M Cache, 1.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
- Mini DisplayPort and/or HDMI output
- 2x SDHC slots
- At least 2x USB ports
- D-pad, 4x face buttons, 2 or 4x shoulder buttons, 2x PSP-style analog sliders
- Clamshell case like a mini netbook, screen folds flat like a tablet PC
- Full QWERTY keyboard with separated keys like on the new Apple keyboards (in fact that's what I traced )
- Integrated Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g/n
- Dock connector on the bottom lets you connect to port replicators for eSATA, VGA, gigabit Ethernet, and other functions, or to a full CD-ROM drive sized dock that's designed to sit permanently on your desk.
- USB Host port to let you access data on it from any desktop PC without needing to boot it up and get it on the network
- 1.8" SSD or hard drive (regular laptop drives don't leave much room for the battery)
- Enough battery power to get at least 3 hours out of it (maybe an open back for an optional high-capacity battery, at the expense of size.)

I just need to finish up the port locations and make a cardboard prop version, then I'll slap together a PDF so you guys can print the parts out too.

*The ULV C2Ds have a 10 watt TDP, according to Intel's spec sheet. The dual-core Atoms have an 8 watt TDP and are signifigantly less powerful. The only disadvantage is the higher cost, but if you want a pocket gaming machine... Just look at the Everun Note and you'll see what I mean. :P According to Intel, the Atom has about half the processing power of the mobile Celeron. It costs 5x more, but it would give a lot more processing power for the heat.

Processor comparison:

@Bic: I like the concept, but will it really work? I have seen those mobo shots, but with the heatsinks on, they are REALLY tall, and that is with a fan, too. :(
A small fan... No, I did think of that. There's a couple solutions that could work:

1. A wide heatsink would give you the same surface area as the tall one
2. Put the hotter of the two components at the top of the case (as you're holding it), and the small fan will be aided by convection.

My HP Pavilion laptop with a hot-as-the-sun Turion only has a fan the size of two half-dollars stacked on top of each other on a heatsink the size of a deck of cards, and it does just fine. Theoretically, this wouldn't need a cooling system as robust as that.

The heatsinks on the demo ION systems aren't too big; they do fit in that little case the seed units have. Are you sure you're not thinking of the gigantic heat sink Intel has to put on their 945 chipset? Now that thing is huge.

I might put that list together, bacteria, but for now:

@Tom61: That DC emulator is "cool", but it is a trick. Basically, it downclocks the dreamcast menu, so while it seems to run well, in reality it would be under 10fps in "real use". The few games that are working are running at 2-3fps. :(

SmartQ is coming out with a new gaming PMP this summer, and it looks to be amazing.

bic, that concept is SWEET! I don't really get how the keyboard folds out though. I personally think a keyboard takes too much space, but if it fits, great.

The video I linked was in game video for Prince of Persia, not the BIOS boot video you were expecting. Looks to be 8-10 FPS, and it's still in early development.

Forgive me, I was ignorant.

The GP32X forums have been down, I was just going on the last I had heard. If the pandora gets 20-30fps DC emulation, I may just change my stance on it. ;)

Woops, sorry. I got to be internet buddies with a few of the PR reps by helping them with some english stuff, mainly their genesis emulator. I get to know about their stuff before it is out.

It will have an SDK, though. :P

It doesn't. The image above is the top hinged part. It opens and closes like a regular laptop. When you want to get your game on, you can flip it around 180 degrees (like a lot of ultraportables do) and close it shut so the screen is on the outside. Sitting on a table, it looks just like a mini laptop.

Imagine a narrower Sony Vaio P with the hinge from the EEE PC T91. It's kind of like that.

I think you should leave that out, or make it a clip-on that uses one USB port or something. I would rather have a nice capacitive touch keyboard than a tiny clicky one.

Tried that. Even the cardboard-engineered version was really awkward to use that way.

Hey, people go crazy over QWERTY keyboards on cell phones that are the size of Tic-Tac containers; this is a whole lot better than that.

You'd have all the weight on the top half, with a thin bottom half. It was really topheavy and the whole thing tipped over unless it was propped up (or perfectly vertical), or you pushed down on the keyboard part constantly.

Besides, on-screen keyboards suck and the physical one is bigger than the screen. :P At least this way it can sort of be justified as a dual-purpouse computer. (Wider potential customer base, though the suit-types who wouldn't DARE be caught with anything with a directional pad would go get a VAIO P.)

Each key is about 3/8" square, with a gap in between. (The space bar, alt, etc. are almost half an inch tall each, and the D-pad is half-height. Full keyboard, full number row, full assortment of F- keys. It has a numeric pad and other keys (PrtScr, Home, End, etc) by way of a Function modifier key.

That sounds small, but it's nothing compared to the keyboard on the acclaimed HTC Dream Android phone, the iPhone keyboard, or what an on-screen keyboard on the 5" touchscreen would be. It's big enough to type with your thumbs or fingertips.

Image

If you want to try, print this out at 6.5" wide.

Maybe the arrow keys could be replaced with something else, and the d-pad could be optionally mapped to them instead.

Hmm, maybe we should split the topic.
