The latest version of my ION handheld concept:
Still finalizing the details, but the dimensions are pretty much set. It's big enough to hold, yet small enough to fit in a pocket comfortably.
Main features:
- 5" 1024x600 capacitive multi-touch OLED display
- 6.5" wide x 3.25" tall x .75" thick
- Nvidia GeForce 9400m chipset
- Either an Atom Z550 (2 ghz, 667 mhz FSB, 10w TDP) or one of the
ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duos* (3M Cache, 1.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
- Mini DisplayPort and/or HDMI output
- 2x SDHC slots
- At least 2x USB ports
- D-pad, 4x face buttons, 2 or 4x shoulder buttons, 2x PSP-style analog sliders
- Clamshell case like a mini netbook, screen folds flat like a tablet PC
- Full QWERTY keyboard with separated keys like on the new Apple keyboards (in fact that's what I traced

)
- Integrated Bluetooth and 802.11 b/g/n
- Dock connector on the bottom lets you connect to port replicators for eSATA, VGA, gigabit Ethernet, and other functions, or to a full CD-ROM drive sized dock that's designed to sit permanently on your desk.
- USB Host port to let you access data on it from any desktop PC without needing to boot it up and get it on the network
- 1.8" SSD or hard drive (regular laptop drives don't leave much room for the battery)
- Enough battery power to get at least 3 hours out of it (maybe an open back for an optional high-capacity battery, at the expense of size.)
I just need to finish up the port locations and make a cardboard prop version, then I'll slap together a PDF so you guys can print the parts out too.
*The ULV C2Ds have a 10 watt TDP, according to Intel's spec sheet. The dual-core Atoms have an 8 watt TDP and are signifigantly less powerful. The only disadvantage is the higher cost, but if you want a pocket gaming machine... Just look at the Everun Note and you'll see what I mean.
According to Intel, the Atom has about half the processing power of the mobile Celeron. It costs 5x more, but it would give a lot more processing power for the heat.

@Bic: I like the concept, but will it really work? I have seen those mobo shots, but with the heatsinks on, they are REALLY tall, and that is with a fan, too.
A small fan... No, I did think of that. There's a couple solutions that could work:
1. A wide heatsink would give you the same surface area as the tall one
2. Put the hotter of the two components at the top of the case (as you're holding it), and the small fan will be aided by convection.
My HP Pavilion laptop with a hot-as-the-sun Turion only has a fan the size of two half-dollars stacked on top of each other on a heatsink the size of a deck of cards, and it does just fine. Theoretically, this wouldn't need a cooling system as robust as that.
The heatsinks on the demo ION systems aren't too big; they do fit in that little case the seed units have. Are you sure you're not thinking of the gigantic heat sink Intel has to put on their 945 chipset? Now that thing is huge.
