Damn it, I like my D-Pad. And to be honest, I'm still adjusting to the analog sticks.

The only analog-type input device that I like is the mouse, you still can't beat using a mouse for a FPS (which is what nearly every game is nowadays). It becomes second nature. If you want to do a 180° and shoot someone, it just can't be done with an analog stick. I think Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are afraid of using mice with their consoles because then they resemble a PC too much.

I don't think Nintendo is going the right direction to find that "revolution". I still feel that the next step in gaming is stereoscopic displays... in other words Virtual Reality. That's where I would see the need for innovative input technologies. But as long as we continue to play games on a TV/Monitor, all I need is a trusty D-Pad and a swarm of buttons (non-pressure sensitive).

Of course, I think Nintendo is still severely traumatized from the VirtualBoy accident. So don't expect them to take a suggestion like mine seriously.

Back in the 90's, VR was considered to be what the future held in computing. But I haven't heard anything about it in a long time. What happened?

I agree about the mouse and FPS's. After playing through Wolfenstien, MOHAA, COD and Far Cry on my PC I simply CANNOUT play a console FPS with the sticks - it drives me mad! It's like driving a tank or something.

I seriously think the gameplay in console games is "dumbed down" to keep you living longer even with sloppy controls. (ie: 3rd person views where you can't see what's shooting/slicing you until you slog around to see it) Whereas PC games are TOUGH!

I actually thought about rigging up a joypad with a touchpad/mouse on it to replicate a mouse, but even that's not the same.

Hey, any of you hear of the Phantom game console thing? The console that's just a PC and downloads all its game. It'll probably never come out, but its controller is a "lapboard" - a keyboard/regular mouse combo that could go in your lap (for play on a chair/other living room thing) Anyway, those whove seen the lapboard think it's awesome. Several analysts think the company should just release THAT and forget the machine!

A friend of mine (who plays online PC FPS a lot) with an Xbox got Halo 2 and said he couldn't stand it. I tried it once and felt the same way. It just CAN'T COMPARE to a mouse and WASD.

I haven't [seriously] played or bought a console FPS since I started playing them regularly on PC 3 years ago. In fact the last console FPS I got was Perfect Dark. (I can still play that fine, though)

Yeah, I know, but I'd really like to know why they didn't put mouse support in games like SOCOM. I really liked the multiplayer in that game but always felt like saying, "I'd be destroying you fools if it wasn't for this stupid controller!"

I guess they felt it would be more fair if everyone was forced to use the same type of input. But I think it's fair that one method is superior to the other.

I know that one of the prime reasons Sega released a mouse for the Dreamcast is for Quake II. Most people that picked that up have complained about the limitations of the controller and so used either a mouse for the Dreamcast or bought a PS/2>Dreamcast adapter.

And I believe the reason that things like mice are exculed from use on the consoles is like what Microsoft is saying, "Its not a computer is a video games entertainment system for your living room." If they made a mouse option for every game think of how they'd look, people would call things like the PS2 or GameCube watta-be computers.

I personally think it would be nice to have a mouse option for the consoles after all all you need for the PS2 is a USB one, same for the Xbox and an adapter for the GameCube.

Has any one tried one of those SmartJoy FRAGS?
Does it feel like it is supposed to?

I can barely turn around and aim fast enough with the sticks, its annoying in LANs. I play better on halo PC even with my computer running it at Lagging speeds. On halo xbox with the sensitivity turned up, it moves faster but I can't aim.

I know what you mean. To this day, I still play Gran Turismo with a dpad because I just can't use a PS analog stick. Though I get along just fine with the DC and GC analog sticks, probably because they're IN THE RIGHT PLACE!

Amen brother! Mouse rocks and D-pad rocks, analog sticks...ehh.

For about a whole year the only games I would play for PS2 were the ones that supported the D-pad. I just couldn't stand those stupid twiddle sticks! I'm used to them now but I still can't aim worth a crap in Halo with them.

I have had a ps2 for a while, and I STILL haven't gotten used to the sticks! The pressure-sensitive d-pad, however, is a blessing.

The D-Pad is pressure sensitive? Duuuuuuuude. I don't like buttons that feel like switches when you press 'em but are in fact pressure sensitive. The L and R buttons on the Dual Shock 2, for example.

You guys ever use the Namco NeGcon? Now that had pressure sensitive buttons but they stuck out far and didn't click/pop at any point while pressing them in. They just slid into the controller, like a gas pedal.

I don't think a mouse would ever work for a console. I mean, come on, how are you supposed to use a mouse when you're sitting on the couch? It's rather uncomfortable having to play games at a computer desk. (One reason why I don't play PC games. )

I'd say if they could make a controller that offers like a track ball you move with your thumb that would work for some games, its great for my computer.

Also I have to say the Playstation D-pad are about the best I've used. When you need to do a lot of circling or what not its better then ones like Dreamcast, or the other standard ones. You just cant pull off Street Fighter moves any easier without it, or cast spells in SOTN.
