What is WITH the Nintendo Revolution???

Post by benheck »

Here's a story on How Stuff Works:

http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/ninten ... lution.htm

I can't believe this! RUBBING??? As if the DS touch pad wasn't enough of a gimmick...

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Nintendo is becoming Atari. By focusing on hardware and just releasing the same old series of games for it over and over they're being beaten by their competitors (who also sell the same games over and over but make a lot more money at it)

Just like Atari they've got enough money to thrash about for a while like a dying animal but that only lasts so long. I PREDICT the Revolution will suffer a quick, Saturn-like KO in the next-gen battle, leaving the Xbox 2 and PS3 to duke it out.

Nintendo should make something COMPLETELY unexpected, like my "Mario in Love" game idea. (That's the one where you guide college-aged Mario through missions on his campus to become Class President and get Respect, ending with rescuing his dream crush the Princess from a genetically altered ape atop a partially construction skyscraper)

I won't go into specific demographics, but there's a portion(s) of the populace keeping Nintendo afloat and THAT'S IT. Soon it will be over...

As long as a game controller requires some sort of physical "activation" nothing will be TRULY "revolutionary" until they have mind-controlled games. (which is probably at least a few generations off)

Now excuse me while I work a rubbing Paddle Controller into my Phoenix.

The rubbing thing is just a rumour. Nintendo still hasn't said what the "Revolutionary" thing will be. But I bet it will be a great system. (Just like all their previous systems. :) ) I'm one of those rare 19-year olds that actually likes Nintendo's kid-friendly style of games, rather than the boring go-around-and-kill people/steal things type of games *cough*GrandTheftAutoandHalo*cough* Besides, if all there were was "adult" games, all the kids would have nothing to play :( . Also, have you played WarioWare touched? That's no gimmick, its pure genious. That game is addictive. (Not to mention, funny.) Sorry, I just had to get all that off my chest. Though I do agree that they should concentrate on making new titles and less ports.

http://www.gamespot.com wrote:RUMOR #2: The Nintendo Revolution's controllers will be DS-style touch screens.

Source: This month's issue of Game Informer magazine.

The official story: "Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation"--Nintendo spokesperson.

What we heard: According to the latest Game Informer, Nintendo is planning something very different for the controller for its next-generation console. "There is no analog stick or shoulder buttons. The touch screen on the face of the controller is designed to be fully customizable, so the developer can configure the buttons any way they see fit, or in other cases will not use buttons at all, instead opting for virtual levers and or other stylus-related inputs." The article goes on to cite sources that say that "Nintendo is actually requiring developers to take advantage of unique touch-screen aspects if it wants to get approval." It also says many publishers are "skeptical" of the concept. Sound insane? So did the DS--before it sold nearly 5 million units. Plus, the very name "Revolution" means Nintendo has something industry-shaking planned for the next generation. "It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo was that crazy," said one source close to the company.

Bogus or not bogus?: We'll go out on a limb and say this could very well be not bogus, though we won't know for sure until E3.

As much as like my old Nintendo systems, ranging from NES to GBC to N64, I must agree that they have made several mistakes (this coming from a guy who hates sony and microsoft). They have stuck to the same games for way, WAY too long, and have made too many that don't deserve to see the sunlight on there way from the store, to your front door. If any games that fit the above description are in your possession, START RUNNING! Nintendo needs to make some games that aren't rated "E" or "G", and then maybe they will get more large population varieties other than just 9 year olds that use their systems. Games that have some graphics that don't look like they were copied from the NES. If Nintendo ever makes another system with one of their stupid ideas like the DS's touch screen, all will be lost.

They need to get back on track with home video gaming systems that we will want to modify and portabilize, and stop making handhelds that nobody really wants.

I don't believe that mind controlled systems are too far off, as quadriplegics can already play Pong when connected to a computer, however I know for a fact that Nintendo will not be the company to develope it. Mind controlled systems will make billions of dollars more than any other system ever made, but will lose their attraction fast.

The Atari "Mindlink" controller of which you speak was activated by raising your eyebrows to indicate left or right, such as to play Pong. It went around your head like a Rambo headband.

Dumb? Quite!

Oh ye of little faith Ben. Now, being a Nintendo fanboy and all, I have to say that I'm relatively impressed by how not-crazy most of the rumors are. I mean, when I heard that Nintendo was going to "revolutionize" gaming, I was very afraid that I'd have to play the next zelda with an iToy.

These are about the craziest rumors I've heard so far. More sane and plausable ones claim the revolution will use fairly standard controlers, but they will have additional gyroscopic input.

I believe that Nintendo knows that it has an innovation problem (not as bad as many though), thats why its trying to give itself more crative methods of input, wireless, ect. Think of the possibilities!

Besides, even though Nintendo abuses some franchises, they try to innovate while doing it (the new DK game with the drums, for instance). Just look at how much the games change between titles. Ocarina of Time was fairly straightforward, ecept that they had you jump between diferent time periods to do stuff. The very next game in the series was radically different, even though the feel of everything was generally the same. Windwaker was less different, but attempted to innovate in the style of the graphics.

I think (bear in mind: fanboy) that Nintendo has a lot of potential in this next generation. Way moreso then the others who insist on simply upping the hardware specs, again. Seriously, what will the PS3 games be like? The same as the PS2 games, only prettier and with better physics so you can beat hookers to death in GTA5 with more gore then ever before. There was a time when simply making things more powerfull, and especially, prettier was the ticket, I believe (and hope) that time is coming to an end.

Also, contrary to several other posters, I praise Nintendo for not relying on gore and violence to sell games, but creating fun games that anyone of just about any age group can appreciate.

First, thanks Sam! Always great to see supporters on my side :D .

I'm talk real mind control. Luc, the Atari did measure facial expressions. Peppers, I was talking about something very similar. The human brain is actually much like an electrical circuit. Though not yet created, it is infact possible to give people the power of sight by using the signals of a video camera, passing them through a interpreter and converter, and insert a pulse into the brain to simulate brain waves.

I do agree that the era of games like GTA3 should end, but we(everyone on this thread so far) are all above the intellegence level of the idiots who only enjoy playing those games. Trust me, half those idiots are friends, and former friends(who owe me money), of mine.

This post DOES - and I did say DOES - once again, relfect the ideas and opinions of nos_slived!

PS: I was thinking, and all of us at BenHeck should make up a bunch of really stupid rumors about the "Revolution", and spred them all over the net  .
