Silly kids and your clutch problems :P . The very first time I drove a stick (which was after I bought a manual car cause auto is lame) I got in and drove away without a problem.

If driving a stick shift is anything like changing gears on a motorcycle, I should have no problems.

Also, I don't understand why some people aren't anxious to get their licenses as soon as they turn 16 like I am. I thought kids loved the idea of the freedom being able to drive presents enough to get a license ASAP.

Doesn't it usually take a little bit of prior knowledge/practice to drive a stick shift without problems?

I knew how it works from the internet and kinda how a clutch behaves from driving a motorcycle so I knew what I was doing. Of course it wasn't quite as smooth as butter, but not horribly bad either  Some people have more trouble with it than others. My mom tried to learn to drive stick, but failed miserably.

Me neither, life would really suck without a car. My brother's waiting till after college to get a car because he wants to pay off the debt faster, but I got mine as soon as I could afford it because having the freedom to go where I want whenever I want is waaay more fun than saving a few bucks.

Well, I should be in pretty good shape, then.

Automatics are so rare in England haha.. I need to send off for my provisional soon... think it's works differently over the sea. Provisional means your allowed to ride a moped, you have to take separate tests to legally drive either a car or motorcycle. You can take driving lessons for either at the age of 17 though (as long as you can afford it)

A car clutch works the same way as a quad/motorcycle clutch - but depending on the car, it can be a lot worse. Most Hondas are a piece of cake to shift and get going. My car (avatar to the left) is a lot trickier. Nothing a lot of practice can't fix.

I bought my first car (honda accord) with cash, and learned it was a stick upon arrival. I learned to drive stick on the trip home :)

Once you drive a stick daily, you will never want to go back to an automatic. The amount of control you have is what attracts me (and less drivetrain power loss :D)

except you shift with your hands, and clutch with your foot. So it's backwards.

Well, the basic principle sounds like it's about the same, so I should be able to adjust fairly easily.

Regarding getting your license early:

There are several benefits to this.

1) Establishing a good driving record = Lower insurance costs. Even if you have your license and don't use it, that counts towards driving accident free.

2) When you do need a car, you'll realize it and be like "OH CRAP!". Some people who live in urban areas can get away without a car, but for others, this causes a serious problem.

An example. "Oh golly gee! My local university has accepted my application! Goodie!" says little Billy. "But wait...Ma works in the mornings, and Pa works all day, and I'd have to get up at 5AM for them to make it to work on time and drive me. Shucks!"

In this example, little Billy realizes six months ahead that he needs to buy a car to drive to school. However, this isn't enough time for Billy to obtain a full license. Looks like little Billy will end up working on his illiterate Uncle's farm, shoveling manure. Looks like little Billy should have planned ahead!

-----------------------------

Mind you, I'm 19 and only have my G2 (I can drive on my own with some restrictions like highways, and my demerits will get wiped when I get my full license). I don't NEED it yet, I drive only once or twice a week. But it beats the hell out of nagging the parents to drive me some place.
Hey, sup?

I not only want to be able to drive, but I'm gonna need to. Nothing here is within walking distance, and public transportation doesn't come out this way. If I'm gonna get a job of any kind and achieve some form of higher education, I need to be able to drive.

Plus, as you mention, "it beats the hell out of nagging the parents to drive me some place."
