Sony: Piece of cake. The PS2 is made of fail, especially the slim model. Nintendo pre-gamecube is rock-solid hardware. Do some comparison tests, get back to us on that. (Which one can be dropped ten stories and still work. I will bet that any NES, SNES, N64 will survive)

Hey, sup?

Basically only two or so versions of the firmware are vulnerable to the hack. If you have a new firmware, you can downgrade it if you know the crypto key for the system. The crypto key can be extracted using a specialized FPGA device that you hook onto the address and data buses, sniffs the data and calculates the key based on the delays the memory crypto mechanisms introduce.
When you have a vulnerable firmware, you need to run a specially prepared version of King Kong, where the shader code is hacked to to overwrite certain memory positions. That way you can run unsigned code. The last thing that needs to be done is making a syscall which disables the hypervisor, which at last makes the console fully controllable by the unsigned software.
Then all that's left is to load a bootloader into RAM which can boot Linux from either CD or network.
All new xboxes come with a new firmware, and it can always be downgraded using the method described above. A certain revision of the xbox can't be downgraded, not because the decryption hack doesn't work, but because the old firmware isn't compatible with the new hardware. So my question is: Is Jasper the first board not to support this downgrade, or did it happen already with some earlier revision?
Of course, during the time it took me to write this post, I could've googled for the answer.

LIAR, I was talking about my slim that was left on for weeks on end.Kurt_ wrote:Sony: Piece of cake. The PS2 is made of fail, especially the slim model. Nintendo pre-gamecube is rock-solid hardware. I probably left it on for a straight 360+ hours once.
I just never got back to my game. The thing still plays great

Did you ever think about moving parts?Kurt_ wrote:ZYU CAN RUN LINUX ON THE XBOPX 360?!!1 TELL MEE HOWWWWW

Drives use sensitive parts unlike the great consoles of yesterday. (which used cartridges which kept moving parts to a minimum.) Also consoles fit a ton more crap into them. The SNES case is buffered by space.

Sony: The PS2 is seriously the least reliable system i've ever owned. The only thing that makes me continue to own one are the games. I currently stil have 3 PS2s in my possession, the only one thats still working 100% being my 1st-gen slim.
Lets see.. one of them developed a bad power supply. Works great, but wont power on after it heats up. Good luck if you want to switch games. It would power off upon hitting reset, not to come back on until it cooled down. *I still have this system*
One of them had laser trouble. The PS2s were notorious for this. I mean, entire internet-businesses sprung up just on offering replacement or adjustment services for PS2 lasers. On this one, I was able to adjust the laser to get it working again. *Gave this one to my relatives*
Another unit had laser trouble, but adjustment would not fix it. I adjusted it hell and back along all axis' to no avail. After replacing the laser assembly, the system was still sketchy. I junked this system, and eventually ended up putting the laser assembly into a coworkers PS2. *junked system*
I have another system with a sketchy laser. Its probably out of adjustment, but I havn't bothered to fix it since I bought HD-Loader, and it still reads the boot disk. This was my main system, but I started to use the slim system after I got that from a coworker. I pretty much gave up on buying any new Sony systems at this point. *Retired*
Ok, to be fair these were all heavily used systems. But thats NO excuse. I still have my original NES for crying out loud! And the movable parts excuse is valid, but that doesn't dismiss the two that broke for un-related reasons. Besides, most other CD based systems ive owned are not so fragile. And i've had a lot of them, including PC Engine Duos that are 20 years old now. After hearing about XBox 360 failures, I decided to wait.

Yeah, sorry about that rant guys
It is -sorta- related, since I know there are a lot of people like me who have been on the fence about buying a 360 after hearing failure stories. I think it's safe to say that the 360 holds the record for failure rates! Its kinda what this thread is REALLY about after all, cooler running 360s that look to be more reliable. And the extra memory doesn't hurt either

I bought an Xbox 360 for my brother yesterday at Target (not a Jasper BTW) and the clerk tries to sell me a warranty and basically makes it out like the 360 WILL fail.
Yet a minute before he was selling some soccer moms Wii shovelware and not warning them - IT SUCKS.
Oh, then as I check out the rest of my crap, the lady in the front asks me if there were any Wii's back there. I say no, she says she wants one, so I say "We've got one at our place and it hasn't been turned on since April... when we hooked it up"
Anyone else notice that now that the Xbox 360 is cheaper than a Wii the Wii shortage magically ended?

I actually quite like the Wii and I think it would sell more if the 3rd party developers would stop dumping thier crappy games on it! God, I mean, it can run cool games, like gta4 and call of duty 4... FOR GOD SAKES, they managed to put COD 5 on it!
Cheers,

That is the reason it sells. Soccer moms don't think the 3rd party shovelware is crappy, its the shovelware that makes their kids go "I want one, I want one". It wouldn't surprise me a bit if there are thousands of little kids that run around in circles on the first level of a game for hours on end.Basement_Modder wrote:I actually quite like the Wii and I think it would sell more if the 3rd party developers would stop dumping thier crappy games on it!
Has anyone noticed that the Wii is the only current system that hasn't had a price drop yet?
