Same sort of price you can get the Canon BP-915 batteries, slimline ones (as I use), 20mm tall; 7.4v, 2000mA - get two, put them in parallel = 4000mA. Similar to yours, but far slimmer option.
I want to add that Ni-Mhs aren't that bad. They have disadvantages, as bacteria correctly points out, but they're still not a bad choice in a portable. I was able to run a SNES (no screen) 8 hours with 4 2600mA Ni-Mh AAs. That's 4.8V at the beginning, so they should still work just fine in a portable. Li-ions are indeed a more elegant solution, but depending on what you want to do (run it on AAs, because you can buy multiple sets, go for something cheaper) Ni-Mhs are just fine.
Not trying to stop you from using Li-ions, don't get me wrong.
Personally, I use NiMh because they're so cheap and easy to get. I'm aware of the voltage loss over time, but it does what I need it to, so I'm not complaining.

Correction - batteries only lose voltage and "power" when they're overcharged.
If your Ni-MH pack is getting worse and it's not that old, you're not taking care of it. Getting a decent delta peak-type smart charger will solve your problems.
Same thing goes for Li-ion packs, but the overcharging protection is mandatory because they'll explode instead of just losing capacity.

*shrug* Whatever. They do what I need them to do, and I can get the batteries from the local store. No waiting for the flippin' post office to find my house. I can also replace them with regular alkalines any time I feel like it, so I've got no reason to use anything else.

I just use Li-ions now for my projects. As you say, the batteries have built in protection; and using a proper charger designed for that type of battery, with its own protections, makes life easy.
The Canon BP-911 (or BP-915, similar) Li-ions come in fat (40mm high) or thin (20mm high) versions. The fat is 4400mA and the thin 2000mA (or 1750mA, I get the 2000mA ones) each. I therefore put two thin cells in parallel, making 4000mA in total and can therefore connect them to a single charger.
