Bacteria's project - *Project Cyber Vision*

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Bacteria's project - *Project Cyber Vision*

Post by bacteria »

:D Here we go again, another Bacteria project you say!!

Just came back from a car boot sale - bought this for £3 (well, that was what he asked for it, paid him £2). Boxed. Complete. :D Can't go wrong!

Tried to get a VR (Virtual Reality) headset a while back but prices got too high, even on e-bay you can spend a lot of money on them.

Guy said he tried to get it to work last night, didn't; I thought, couple of quid, worth a gamble!

Initially system didn't turn on - mains plug goes into a box which takes in the signals and outputs them, only takes 5v, 2.2 amps. Ok, I thought, if this works I can easily make a battery pack 5v.

DC end going into box needs pressing right in, must be a slightly loose plug inside - anyway, powers up fine now.

This is the system:

Tried system, realised the main reason the guy sold it so cheap - the left lens works fine, the right one is virtually white light although the text shows through ok. This must either be a bad lens or a faulty connection on the colour lines - anyway, the left lens is perfectly fine.

Another thing - I wear spectacles as I am short sighted (Myopia). VR glasses are of little use if you wear spectacles as you can't use them with specs on and if you take them off your vision is very blurry!

Hit on an idea. At work, I have to be able to see what is going on around me, however at quiet times I can read or play games until anyone wants me for any reason. I put the left eyeglass onto my specs, focus was right! I can see all around me, full vision in one eye and very good image quality with the other eye for the game being played! :D :D

Removed the back plate, the screens and mobo are really tiny!

Then removed the screws holding in the rest of it:

Took some pics from my camera on macro mode, slightly blurry pics though - the screen at the eyeglass end is only 18mm wide. System being shown is a Namco plug'n'play (bought one today £1). I sell them for profit on e-bay!

(the line on the top of the screen is present on the plug'n'play, not a fault on the screen. All the Namco PacMan systems have this.

Image

This is what I get on the right lens, camera couldn't focus as text on screen wasn't good enough).

Image

This is the eyepiece, about 35mm thick, including mobo.

Image

Spare specs on it - gives an idea of size:

Image

The control box is 150 x 110 x 35mm in size; I can easily open it up, incorporate batteries, games system and make a different case for it. The one cable coming out of the box to the eyepiece will remain, as it carries the signals for the video and audio. I can make an earpiece on the specs.

Image

This was my previous set of specs, I got new ones a couple of months ago, the lenses are fine, just got lightweight ones to replace them with. This means the old specs are absolutely fine to use in a modding project!

Project is on hold, I must not get tempted to work on it until AFTER I finish my PSone, N64 and Retro Duo consoles and start selling some of my cases! This VR project will be my next project though! :D

System naked:

Concept is proven now, just need to devote time to make it work.

Just so you know, those arent "VR" glasses. They are just basically TV on your face. Its not VR. Sort of close. ;)

Nice idea. I have a VR idea that I'm going to announce soon. (Patent pending. Yes, I went there.)

Also, your going to need to get both lenses working.

As the goggles work like a pair of 3D Stereostropic goggles. Both lenses are needed to get a full picture/focused picture.

HotDog-Cart - I take your point, it is "TV in your face" rather than VR, thinking about it.

As Mario indicated one of the screens works fine. I am not going to get 3D from these and frankly, the prospect of wearing these on my head as intended is not something that interests me, its "Hey look at me, I look like a prat".

One screen is perfectly fine to show 2D, tested it. Only fitting it on one eye position anyway. It gives me a chance to watch a movie during quiet time at work, or play games whilst still being able to work. It's a bit like a Cyborg gadget - may well call my project "Cyber Vision" or similar! :D

Hey, time to change the topic title!

:) Nice. Soon I'll post the headset thing that I've been working on with a company. The patents pending, and we have protection.

Also, you can use them with glasses on. I do it with mine.

Interesting, keep us posted on that.

Bet it will cost more than £2 ($3) my project will (plus a little extra for the casing and game system)! :D :D

Hoping this unit won't give headaches, won't know until complete. It will be interesting, after the unit is made, and I have played on a game for 30 mins or so, how my eyes react when my specs are removed for my normal pair again.

This is a poor representation from what I remember when I put the lens from the unit to my right lens on my old specs. The pics are a couple of pics from Windows pictures you get; only showing this as a rough idea of what I mean about seeing the picture but also seeing everything else around you. Basically, as the right eye is not sealed by a rubber surround to give a "cinema" effect, you can see what is going on around the sides of the viewfinder. You other eye (left) can see everything as normal. The effect is a bit like "picture in picture".

As mentioned, the pic below is just trying to give a representation of what I am trying to project; the pic of Rio representing your normal view and that of the fish of the viewfinder. Crude pic, no accuracy, so take it with a pinch of salt: will try and do a proper illustration when I do the project more - on hold and packed away while I concentrate on my PlayStation project.
