New Guy ;) WTB: SNESp

Post by HinesleyT »

Hey guys! I'm REALLY new to the forums, as in this is my first post haha.. but I'm really interested in this whole scene, I just don't know if I can take on the hands on stuff yet, so I'm really looking to just buy one.. nothing in particular as far as cases go or anything, a 5" screen would be nice but.. it's all relative.. any offers?

Thanks!

How much are you looking to pay? Expect to pay at LEAST $250.

The ones in the book are actually even more expensive usually, tbh. The parts run at least $150-200, and it involves many, many hours of labor.

These things ain't cheap.

You may be better of getting a PSP modded with a SNES emulator... Actually, I have a PSP with an SNES dpad in it, interested? I can post pics in a day or two, or lame phonecam pics today or tommorow.

I wonder how hard it would be to take a Handy FamiEight and add an SNES port - like from a RetroDuo or a FC Twin. If you don't know, a Handy FamiEight is a NES clone that fits on a GBA SP - here's an ebay listing

The controllers already have 4 face buttons.

Anyway, just a thought.

That would be nearly impossible.

No it would not! The famieight is a standard NOAC that outputs composite to a digital video converter. Adding an SNES board would be trivial in terms of possibility.

Of course, it would need a new case built to fit the board and to have a proper cart slot, but those are obstacles that are easily overcome. I would do a mod like this myself, but if I am going to build an SNESp, I want it to have a nice 5" screen.

All you would need to do is modify the casing, rewire the controls, stick in an fc twin board, rewire the cart slot, and hook up the composite out to the lines where the NES used to be. Easy as cake!

your looking at a bare minimum of around 120$ for parts alone for a decent one going up to 180-200$ if you have stuff like lipoly batteries and such, my commissioned snesP was 300 and frankly for all the work i have in it i undercharged a LOT.

The SNES emu doesn't have 100% fullspeed compatibility. In fact, at least two of the games that I wanted to play the most (ChronoTrigger and Uniracers) would NOT run at full speed. Plus, you've got either wasted screen space or a badly-proportioned, stretched image. It's an option, but a poor one IMO.

I used to be the same as you... Look at my posts on GP32X, I have spent LOTS of time arguing against the psp snes emu. Especially for chrono trigger! Recently, there was a new release for the snes emu that adds support for offloading some of the work onto the psp media engine. I hate to admit it, but it is REALLY close to perfect. Chrono trigger with frameskip set to 0 has never, ever dropped below 51 fps, and with 1 frameskip and bilinear filtering, it looks like a dream. Sure, wasted screen space, but still bigger than a native 3.5" display. And the size to screen ratio is much better than a portable. ;)

I've never had a problem with Chrono Trigger on my psp, only Super Mario RPG, Kirby Super Star, Final Fantasy 3, Kirby's Dreamland 3, and a couple others. But other than that, the snes emulator is great.

It doesn't matter how good an emu is, there is no substitution for the real thing!

The first pic is an emu - the bird, relative of the ostrich - not an emulator. I don't understand how a moose represents a retro game system, though.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. Emulators have a lot of benefits over the "real thing". First, of course, price - then there's portability, (without spending tons of money and time building your own system - or being limited by hardware that other people make.) Then there's things like freeze states, the ability to use other controllers - slow mo, fast speed, turbo, homebrew, PD Roms.... Plus, some games lag on the original system, but you can adjust the speed on an emulator.

Yes, I love the old systems - and there is something nostaligic about playing games on the hardware they were designed for. However, emulators have their place as well.

Yeah, I got the whole Emu=Bird, but I didn't get the second picture.
Oh, yeah, don't forget to mention that emulators can have Anti-Aliasing, which makes some games a lot more playable.
