One of the many reasons I remain convinced Britain is better than the US. I stand a chance in a knife fight, but a six year old can kill me with a gun. Survival of the fittest gets thrown right out the window. The weak and stupid can defend themselves and breed just as well as the strong and smart.
Didn't violent crimes increase in Britain after they banned guns?

Here's the thing, I live in the city that is home to headquarters of the National Rifle Association. There is practically no crime here. on the other hand, Washington DC is just 10 miles down the road where for all intents and purposes, guns are illegal. You want to talk about violence problems? Look no further than DC. Things are so bad there that convenience stores need to keep their cashiers behind a slab of bullet-proof glass. I would take my chances with responsible gun owners over the streets of DC where guns are illegal any day. Bottom line: Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

You can block knives, less chance and dying and if all else fails you can outrun a guy with a knife. Outrunning Bullets is a little harder

There is a small ammount of gun crime, but its usually inter-gang (or bystanders caught up in) fighting. Which is only really in the estates in places like London and Manchester.
1. Just glad guns aren't legal? That does not help jerks who don't follow the law! :?

2. Me? I'd run from a knife. I'd run and zigzag and bunny-hop randomly along the way from a bullet. (Yes, I am serious.)

3. Gangs are everywhere. There are gangs in our neighborhood too! :?

I tend to lean away from gun control myself, but keep this in mind: what you describe is essentially a typical big city vs. its suburbs situation. Most inner-city areas of major cities, usually minus the commercial downtown areas, have their rough areas. The suburbs, however, are usually relatively tame. Plus, DC has been pretty bad for years now, but its ultra-strict gun rules are fairly new. It's not so much that I'm disagreeing with your opinion, but keep the logic in check, I guess.

It's not so much whether guns kill people or not so much as a fair chance to preserve one's life. Someone who's willing to pull a gun and shoot someone's going to be just as willing to pull any other weapon on someone. The only real difference I see is that if it's a knife, my chances of escape and survival are considerably higher. My intense dislike of guns has more to do with the immense disadvantage a victim faces than it does with crime. As long as there are people, there will be crime and murder. I just sincerely feel that adding guns fecks with the natural order of things. The strong defeat the weak, and life goes on. What happens when it's the weak going on?

Criminal pulls gun on victim.
Victim realizes they're screwed.
Good citizen with a concealed carry permit blows away the criminal.
World goes on with one less scum bag.
(Unfortunately the world doesn't work that way, because some people seem to think that those that would like to harm others still have rights. The way I see it, you try to take away someone else's rights, you lose yours.)

Are you really so immature to believe that someone who is motivated enough to premeditate murder couldn't get their hands on a firearm no matter what the law says?

Yes

Because if guns are illegal (which they are in my country) your average petty criminal will not go through the hassle and expense of getting a gun just to commit crime. The Penalties for carrying, let alone using a gun are tenfold worse, why bother when you can just pick up a kitchen knife and achieve the same result?

I just dont understand how both people having guns is better than neither having guns. If both have a gun, someone ends dead, and i dont like that. Not all criminals are inherantly evil, some a victims of circumstance. And everyone deserves a second chance in lefe after they've been punished accordingly.

Also one other by-product of illegal guns is that the police dont carry firearms. Which makes me feel a lot safer too.

I think the police should be allowed to carry firearms, for the use of scare tactics

No, I'm not. I guess I simply lacked the words to make my point clear. I meant more that if someone's premeditating murder, they're going to think of a way, no matter what. Maybe that means somehow getting a gun, regardless of the law. Maybe that means cutting the brake lines of their car. Making guns illegal isn't going to stop premeditated murder by a long shot. I know that full well.

But what it is going to stop is something that scares me a hundred times more than premeditated murder. It's going to stop these people who feel a need to carry a gun at all times. It's going to stop the guy who was accidentally cut off by an overexcited teen from getting out of his car and blowing the kid away. It's going to stop someone who's so stressed out over a single moment from grabbing the most destructive thing they happen to have and taking a life. Like Extreme_Jesus says, your average petty criminal isn't going to bother.

Guns don't cause crime. I know and accept that full well. Guns just make a dangerous person more dangerous. I am sick to death, though, of walking down the street, wondering if someone's got a gun, and if I look at them wrong, I'll get shot. I am sick of worrying who's got a gun, and whether they might use it or not. I am sick of seeing desperate people become monsters just because it's all to easy to kill.

Well, this argument is bound to get out of hand, even though it's been surprisingly controlled so far. If anyone really wants to duke it out with me, hit up my AIM: Wileyville.

Either way, back on topic now!

I agree with much of what you're saying, I'm just pointing out that its not guns that kill people, its people that kill people. If it were guns that killed then more people would die here in the home of the NRA HQ. And about the DC gun ban, you do realize its over 30 years old, right? (well it was until the supreme court finally struck it down, but if I remember correctly it was immediately replaced with another law just as restrictive)
