Technically, you're not looking for VoIP then, you want a VoIP-to-PSTN solution ;).
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

I may not know of any free VoIP services. But if you find one, There are a few DS homebrew you can use for VoIP's. That way, you don't have to be Tied to a PC to talk to your friend.

I do However know of a nearly free VoIP service called Magicjack? More about it Here: http://www.magicjack.com/8/index.asp

But It can get it cheaper if you get it from here: http://www.qvc.com/qsearch/search.aspx

Gotta love QVC and their Prices!

Seriously, just use http://www.voipcheap.com/en/index.html

And why can't you just call a normal phone or a cell phone? Don't give me any "I'm too poor" excuses.

Uhm. Lets think about that for a second.

I need to call my friend for about 1 hour at a time. And shes in the states, and I'm in Canada. Yea, theres a little thing called International Calling Fees. I don't have a job so my mom would see that fee on the bill, and then flip out due to how expensive it is, and I couldnt pay it back.

It isn't FREE, but it's pretty darn cheap to use Skype to call landlines or mobile phones in the US or Canada. We're talking unlimited (10000 minutes, actually) time for about $3 (USD) per month. I mean, that's dirt cheap - surely you could get someone to foot the bill for that?

Okay people, I have ADSL line for internet but would like to use my computer to answer regular land line phone system; I do not want to go with a VoIP phone. I just want to use my computer and modem like a regular phone. Is there a way to do this? Would IL replace my phone and use the computer but not VOIP. Do you have any real idea about this? Thanks a lot.

Ok - here is completely free solution.

http://www.grandcentral.com/howitworks/gizmo

Basically, just get a Gizmo account ( gizmoproject.com ) and a GrandCentral account ( grandcentral.com ) - link the two up, and start calling.

You can actually pair this up with a VOIP router, and make and receive free VOIP calls to a regular house phone.

(If those instructions don't work / are confusing - just google the words Gizmo Grandcentral and Free - maybe throw in the word "sunrocket" )
