A quick Question

Post by evilteddy »

This is a question directed mostly to Marshall, Electric Rain, Gannon and Timmeh87. To get straight to the point, how did you guys get so awesome at electronics. I can look at the circuit board for the Gamecube IDE interface and understand a very little bit. What sort of things would I need to do to get even a little bit of proficiency in understanding circuit design because its something I've wanted to do ever since I was 8 and while I can solder and understand capacitors, resistors, LEDs and other diodes it is a very basic understanding. So what would you recommend I do to get better.

Also I finished my n64 portable a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone know what I need to do to get the fancy little portabliser title under my name?

I learned by looking up stuff i don't understand on the internet. There's also classes and stuff you can take.

Just have to be willing to learn, if there's something you don't understand, you look it up, you ask someone who knows, you take courses, anything that will get you the knowledge you need.

I took a class in high school, really didn't learn much. You just have to have an interest and willing to learn. You can learn a lot by taking things apart and reading books. You just have to get involved, reading isn't enough.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really want to learn to do fun things with electronics so I'll continue to pull things apart, read things and muck around with electronics.

That's very flattering of you, but I think you're overestimating my skills. :P

I've been really into electronics for quite a few years now. All I ever did was research stuff on the internet. I was a part of the Electro-Tech-Online forums for a long time, where I learned most of what I know today. The people there are very helpful, despite how much I used to bug them with simple questions. I also used to check out different schematics over at Discover Circuits, which took up several hours a day of my life for a few years.

I learned about electronics the same way I've learned HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and MySQL; by looking stuff up on the internet. There are lots of great tutorials for all sorts of "technical" things like this...

Even I don't understand a lot of what goes on about the GC IDE/USB project, mostly the software end of it. Many don't, which is one of the reasons that it hasn't gotten built by anyone but its creator yet. I can read its schematics, and that's about it. 8)
