Bacteria's Multi-Platfrm project - Phase 2 - SNES

Post by bacteria »

Right, started project! Full-sized PAL SNES.

I have taken several pics so far, not uploaded my web site with them, although will do over next days (will let you know on this thread). Basically, into weekend now, wife has been nagging me about how much time I have been doing my website lately, so probably won't get much project done before Monday!

Spent a grand total of 20 minutes from start to get to this stage:

SNES board removed, used a different 2200uf capacitor from an old dead PC motherboard, as it was smaller than the one on the SNES; removed the RV video plug by soldering it from the board, removed all the heat removing plates.

Plugged system into my television, all fine.

I then of course turned on the system after the power was removed, to empty the capacitor.

Anyway, at least you know the project is underway. I don't expect this one to take many hours to complete, it is just getting the time allocated...

I will relocate the cart slot of course and work out the pinouts for the audio and video, try an RGB mod, etc, etc. Plenty to do, but shouldn't present much of a problem (I can always keep composite if the RGB mod fails).

It looks like you can cut off a lot of the ground on the sides - good news!

Thanks.

I put the mobo in my casing just to show that it fits (as designed) and also to show that there is room enough for the controller mobo.

Image

The only mobo I will have to hack off all I can, is the MegaDrive 2 system as the board on that is bigger. Anyway, I worked it all out before.

I can trim off some grounding strips if I need to on this SNES board.

My intention is to keep the video/audio cable in and trace back the audio signals on the board, same with video, then try the RGB mod and see if that works.

Just about to make a start on my SNES section in my website, cover progress so far...happy reading!! Update - done!

why is that capacitor connected by wires?

So that it can be easily relocated to wherever there is space. If it weren't, it would stick up an inch and if 2 wires can save 1 inch of thickness, who's not going to?

couldn't the space be saved by just pulling it out a bit and then bending it over?

Putting the cap on wires also lets it go wherever there's room, instead of adding it to the thickness of the motherboard. (From what I can see, it would still be pretty tall even on its side.)

Looks good so far, bacteria!

ok, i can see that, especially if the repositioned cart reader wants to take up that space.

Although I already know that this thread will always be at the top of the forum and will probably span 15 pages of just your updates, I can clearly see that this one will happen quite fast.

So far we know that you rmoved the case and have begun flattening it. Looks good so far, I mean, its not like I havent seen a naked snes before. :P

Interesting comments, guys!

The new capacitor is 10mm wide and not 16mm wide as per the original one. Whilst the complete system for the N64 project ended up 33mm thick, this one for the SNES will definitely only end up 29mm in total, even though this only allows for my system to be 6mm thick (plus the thickness of the perspex). The capacitor will be placed in the middle of the case or behind the relocated cart slot. I am hoping to not need to raise the mid section, as I did on the n64, although I plan to still add a fan as the 7805 will need heat removed. This one will be a lot flatter than the N64 one (as indeed it should be). I will also try a lower capacity capacitor, slimmer, and see if all works fine on that.
