One word: "game action replay" (ok that's 3) but that should do the job...somewhat rare though.

You can back up any data manually from the internal SRAM, but not all carts use it. Just have to wire it to a rom dumper in a manner that keeps the ram powered so it doesn't loose that data.

Or that dumps the ram somewhere non volatile and then have it read from there, but that's kind of a back and forth way of doing it.

It would be complicated to do, in other words. I dont know anything about the action replay, but I guess you can use it for gamesaves.

The first one (for nes) was for save states (hence game action replay). The versions for other consoles were basicly cheat devices...however for nes it makes save states!
