iPod Touch: Your Honest Opinion
I've got a $300 cap on my Christmas gifts in total this year. Don't get me wrong, I hate Apple just as much as the next guy, and I never have been a fan of the iPod line; but that touch looks DAMN cool.
I really don't want anything besides games and maybe a ping pong table, and the games I can buy with money from work; the ping pong table I can go without. (I just mooch off my friend's anyways!) Anyways, for those of you who own the Touch (8 gig is what I'm shooting for), what do you think of it? If you don't own it, what do you think of it? And seeing as an 8 gig Touch would eat up my $300 very quickly, is there any alternatives you would recommend, or points to make me reconsider? Thanks guys!

I dunno what you want in a music player, but the Sandisk Sansa e200 series is pretty awesome IMO. They are basically an Iplod nano imitation, but less expensive (you can get an 8gig one, refurbished for like $130 at factory direct). They also have an fm tuner, video playback (crappy), picture veiwer, and microSD card slot (Im going to factory direct soon to get a 2 gig card for $26).

It's a good PDA, but from what I've heard it's basically gimped because Apple's not releasing the development kit until something like February. And apparently it has a relatively high signal to noise ratio on the headphone jack.
If you really want a PDA, look into Windows Mobile devices. I have a Dell Axim X30 mid, and it works for videos and the occasional 'net fix (especially with a 2 gig SD card). Problem is, most WM devices and Palms are big, and they're really not that great for multimedia. (A lot of noise in the headphones and playing videos eats up the battery, even with hardware acceleration.)
If you want to carry around some music, get an iPod Nano. It's plenty big enough for a few CDs worth of music.
If you want to carry around a crapload of music, get an iPod Classic 80 gig ($250), or if you really want to carry around the entire Columbia Records library, just get money for Christmas and add $50 to get the 160 gig model.
If you want to squeeze as much as you can out of your gift allowance, go on their online store and search for "refurbished". You can get a last-gen 8 gig Nano for $150 with free shipping.
Why am I pushing the old Nano? Because it's small enough that you don't think twice about taking it with you, they've got good sound quality, and none of that extra gimmicky BS you really don't need on a music player. And why Apple products in general? iTunes. Plain and simple, it's great of you're only looking for a couple songs, or if you're looking for more off-beat music you probably can't find at Borders. (I still buy real CDs because they're lossless. High bitrate compressed audio is still compressed, after all.)
Their products aren't complete crap like everyone makes them out to be. Sheesh.
Avoid the Sandisk Sansa mXXX line; my cousin bought one. The first was DOA, the second died when he used the recorder (or used the software to update the firmware or something), and he can't use the radio or microphone on the third or else it will suffer the same demise as the last one.

I absolutely LOVE my iPod Touch, it's the best iPod I've ever owned, except maybe my 1st Gen... it's pretty rad
But seriously, it is an absolutely awesome foray into the iPhone-minus-the-phone category. I don't think Apple, or anyone else, could have done a better job, at present. The internet capability was the icing on the cake, on top of everything else I had always wanted in an iPod.
I held off getting a new iPod to replace my aging 4th Gen 20GB, because I didn't want to watch videos on a smaller, rather low-res screen. I knew that Apple would eventually release something with a bigger, better screen, whether it was a touch screen or not, I didn't care. I'll say it again, they couldn't have done better with their first attempt. The obvious features like a large screen and flash memory are necessity, but the great additional features like the killer touch-interface, internet capabilities (paired with wireless iTunes) and the future possibilities of the SDK in February make the Touch a fantastic device, with huge possibilities, especially starting in February!
Anyway, you MUST try one out at a local store or something, especially one with videos to demo, and internet access to mess around with. I will be very surprised if you're not sold after being able to test out all of its features personally.
Obviously I love mine and would recommend it to anyone, but do you have any questions?
PS- The screen is flawless, and I've had it since the day it came out. It might just maybe be bullet-proof

Agreed. It is a fantastic little device. The sound quality is actually very good provided you have good headphones.
If you go through the 9-second painless jailbreak process, you can run NES games, have mobile Chat, Notepad, calander, labyrinth (this cool tilt game), touchscreen piano, other games, pedometer, word scramble email, safari, youtube, file transfer, sending songs, VNC client (remote desktop) snake, calculator, cistomizing backgrounds and icons, google maps, graffiti, doodling, weather, stocks, and new apps every day or so.
Cover flow is damn cool too.

Yea the ipod touch was like one of the coolest things i had before I sold it. If you get one you have to jailbreak it. If you dont, your stuck with like a barely usable device. When I jailbroke mine, I had a Vista Ultimate theme, all the iphone apps and apollo. Also if you go search on google (im too lazy to) you can connect it to a windows mobile device and you can surf the web anywhere. If you want to find it on google type in ipod touch 3g. Itll be there. Peace.

@ Bibin: Theres no need to hi-jack the thread so I wont make a new post. I sold it because now I have 3 devices that can do all of that and more.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I'm not so sure about the Zune or any other player of the sort. I really don't care about an FM transmitter or that stuff. The iPod Touch draws me simply because of the web browser and neat interface, really. I did some research on the Jailbreak hack, (may need help with that later
) and the Touch now looks cooler and cooler. To be honest with you, I really don't need it; I've got a laptop, a PSP, and a cheapo mp3 player for exercising and the like, but the Touch is pretty smexy, and I really can't think of any other items I want at the moment. Backed up on games to play, getting a new TV, and I'm in good health. So why not?

Personally, I think that the Nokia N800 series of internet tablets looks better than the iPod touch for WWW browsing over WiFi. Bigger screen, user removable batteries, camera, Linux based (already a tidy little group of applications starting to crop up).

Yeah, the Nokia internet tablets are pretty nice, and cheaper too. They have expandable memory as well (I'd get one of these for flash).Sir Games-A-Lot wrote:Personally, I think that the Nokia N800 series of internet tablets looks better than the iPod touch for WWW browsing over WiFi. For a hard drive based one, I'd get an Archos 604 Wifi. Awesome screen, 30gb, internet.
