I don't think religion has a place on the forums, it's too easy to make someone mad.
Don't get me wrong I am a christian and would love to talk about my faith but I don't think we should discuss it here.
Except it's not simple. Not at all. As we just saw, most people aren't offended by mildly religious avatars and sigs, so saying nothing offending is impossible, since people are offended by different things.
I have more to add, but I need to go, I'll continue my thoughts later.
Let's see if I can get back on my train of thought from this morning...
I see nothing wrong with political or relgious avatars, signatures, or member names. If you feel a certain way about something, you should be able to express it, as long as it is not derogatory in nature (ie: Bush should die, Jesus is evil, etc). I don't think that soundwave's original name or gannon's avatar express any ill-will or intentions to Christianity and should therefore remain.
To go back to the nothing offensive proposition, again, it's impossible, anyone can be, or say they are, offended by anything. More realistically, I'd suggest no pornography (or very suggestive images (aka, the Linux chicks (not all of them, just a few of the ones Jack decided to use))), nothing with any words blocked by the filter, and nothing with extreme amounts of blood and gore. I think this would keep the boards 'PG,' and is fine by me...

I liked the Linux Chick avatar! Reminded me an 80's album cover (like Great White, ZZ Top or Warrent... ESPECIALLY Warrent)

The main reason I have "taboo" subjects is because I've visited Aint It Cool News for a long time and whenever they do a talkback and get started on 1) religion or especially 2) politics the whole thread becomes a vicious flame-war about that, rather than the subject. Granted the webmasters on that site often "bait" the readers by working anti-"insert political group here" comments into every other review/story, but still, why would someone want to alienate potentially half their audience and have them get mad? To watch them fight and increase the click-thrus on ads/web stats? (probably)

Anyway, that site shows what CAN happen... And remember the old saying: "To keep your friends never discuss religion or politics" Besides, what do those have to do with making portables?

Also a lot of the readers of this site are under 18... so it's good to keep it fairly clean for them. (Although I still miss the Linux chick...)

I don't want to discuss religion, I just don't want to see Jesus turning into a hulk monster every time I get on the forums!

I myself cannnot figure out why the linux chick (I though it was close to the line but not over) got so much heat, but Jesus turning into the hulk is fine with about everybody?

Because sexual themes are more frowned upon in our society than satiristic religious themes.
