Wow no updates for a while. Anyway here's some picture for you to ogle at (only the front plate i'm afraid):

I have an all new design! It no longer looks dreamcast-y unfortunately but it makes it more portable and looks cleaner. I have also worked out all of the placing for the bottom half of the case and allocated battery space (wasn't gonna be any batteries previously , but I changed my mind).

I've decided to cancel my plans to add a LED sound mod and a fan. I've considered it with my current design options and decided if I were to add it , it would make it look less clean. That and there is currently no room for the fan.

16/10/07: Name officially changed to DreamStation portable , because i've changed my design so it now looks like a huge dreamcast controller. I feel this looks better and makes a change to the usual rectangle/oval designs we always see. Pictures coming soon , I promise. The name is also epic IMO , DS+PSP = DSP. Get it? Just me then.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

For my product design coursework , I will be making a portable PSone. It's kinda on a different level to the rest of the class :P . I basically have an A in the bag already because of my coursework is so 1337 , so I can go a bit crazy with this.

I've decided to opt for a vacuum formed case , because the school has got a machine aswell as the equipment needed. I will be using a PSone screen rather than a third party one.

The most interesting thing though , is that I will add a sound reactive LED mod.

Info on that mod can be found HERE

It seems relatively simple , and very cheap. There is also another version of this mod on instructables.

Unfortunately , all of my design images / started stuff is in school so no pictures yet. I will post any pictures of stuff I do during the holidays.

Feedback/suggestions?

Be prepared to work with the controllers. In my opinion that's half the battle.

^ So I have noticed , i've already destroyed one controller.

I've made a wooden mould for my case , which I will begin to build next monday when I get back to school.

Ok i've harvested my old PS2 Phat. I have taken the cool little swivelling logo on the front and I want to use the fan. Does anyone know the voltage/MAh of the fan? I know the PSone doesn't use a heat sink so it could get pretty hot in there with batteries and a screen.

Completed the vacuum form mold , I used some stupid wood so there is a bondo like substance filling the crack's and small holes on the surface. Pictures coming monday , when I have my product design lesson.

Also , being a school project and all , if anyone could supply me some nice diagrams and pictures I could use as coursework , that would be really helpful.

In other words , bump.

Help needed:

I want to leave both the controller ports on there so I can play it with other people. How would I go about doing so? Where I would usually remove the controller port , would I just solder my hacked up controller to it and leave the port there?

Help appreciated.

I imagine you'd need a multitap.

That's a clever name for your portable.

If you want both player 1 and player 2 ports, just wire the controller jack and your built-in controls to the same spots on the PSOne board. I think you would only need a multi-tap if you want more than 2 people playing. On my SNESp I only have a player 2 jack. If crowding around the portable is an issue, I just use my AV out jack to play on the TV.

Kickass design on the case, by the way. Do you really have access to a vacuum forming machine? How large is it? Any chance you could take some pics of it to rub in how much easier it will be for you to vacuum form your case than for those of us who have to build ours from scratch?

Thank you for your help and compliments , they are greatly appreciated :D .

As for the forming machine , I can't take any pictures seeing as i'm in my school holidays, however , eBay has the answer:

Image
Forming area: 430mm x 280mm
Depth of draw: 170mm
Max material thickness: 6mm

I've just started making a new vac mould , it's slightly different to the pictured design but is still in effect the same thing. WHen I finish my case I will finally add pictures , promise.

Finished the mould , made a test plate (not for final portable , lacks holes) and i came out pretty nice , the final mould varies from the design image but still looks pretty nice.

The plastic is shiny too!

I've encountered a cunundrum (sp?).

Should I have analog? I mean , does the PS1 really need it?

Also , the original PS1 controller have seperate boards for the L+R buttons , will these be suitable for the portable?

The seperate boards will be fine.

I would put the analogs in if you plan on playing a lot of good games.
