Interesting. :) I assume that's for PC?
Indeed, System Shock 1 and 2, Deus Ex and now Bioshock are very very (and with good reason, Bioshock it's SS2 spiritual succesor and DX it's SS2 spiritual succesor) much alike. As you said, most games, storywise wont go much farther than Super Mario in a way that the story it's mostly an excuse for the player to kill as much as he or she can without asking too many questions as to who he or she is killing and why.

You are the hero, this is the bad guy, kill his lackeys till you get to him, get the power up and save the day. Works for Super Mario as well as Final Fantasy.

But with these games, much like the real world, nothing it's set in stone, and what you do in the game world reflects what you are in the other. In DX for example you can kill anyone you are told to do so or start hacking computers and find out who is who and decide the way you want to interact with this world (and no, you wont grow horns like in Fable).

I remember coming to a point when the good guys told me that I should kill this guy who "was a bad terrorist, he is an enemy", some of the "good guys" I had to interact with where "good people" some where pretty messed up, and, much like Bioshock you get to play this good like character who can do anything (Deus Ex, Theos Ek Mekkanes, god from the crane) so I decided not to do it, it had consequences, I wasn't in this linear story where I don't get to decide, I wasn't Mario, I wasn't Squall.
Sounds pretty cool. I'll have to look this one up when I'm done with BioShock. I feel that open-ended worlds are the ultimate gaming experience. This is a big part of the reason why Oblivion is such an amazing game and shows how far other game series have to go.

To paraphrase the Architect in the Matrix Reloaded... "Its all about choice."

Well I just finished Bioshock PC version... what I guess you'd call the "nice" ending if you save all (or most) of the little sisters. All I can say is perhaps we should do a topic on the podcast about all-too-short, or disappointing, game endings. Seriously, it's like 30 seconds. Makes me wonder if it's the TRUE ending.

Now I'm gonna play through and rip the ADAM out of every little sister I find! The final few stages, and not just the end, will likely be quite different.

Damn, now I've run into another problem. The newest nVIDIA driver (version 163.44) makes the demo (I'm unable to obtain a full copy of the game for a couple of weeks) run beautifully, but it also makes my computer crash whenever I try to load a video of any kind or any format in any manner (i. e., whether it be in YouTube, WMP, etc.). Installing the older driver (version 158.22) resolved this problem, but alas, the demo is once again unplayable. Does anybody have a suggestion?

P. S. - So-called "child murder" FTW!

Edit: There actually isn't any use of the term "child murder" in that news article.

I'm using the latest NGO drivers myself, and everything works fine.

And I have to say, the demo wasn't anything like the full game- it really only introduced you to the very basic concept of the game, without *giving* you anything. Now that I bought the full game, it is so much better. I actually find myself taking it slowly, looking for ammo and enemies carefully- and on occasion, fleeing when I do find an enemy :D

You could get a 360... I just dropped the disc in and away I went. :D

Seriously though, I wish I had some advice on this one beyond that, but I don't. The problems you've had as well as the issues Ben ran across perfectly illustrate why I gave up on PC gaming a long time ago.

Wish you the best though. Hopefully you can get it back up and rocking, because I wouldn't want anybody to miss out on the chance to play this fantastic game.

Couldn't agree more. The demo doesn't even scratch the surface of what this game has to offer.

I started playing Bioshock on PC at about 2 PM, played until 4 PM, then started playing at 10 PM and finished at 12 AM. I would say this game has 4 hours play time, if you only run through it once. But the replay value is massive, since there are so many other Plasmids to buy and use.

Thanks for the wishes. Now, you may have "just dropped the disc in", but dude: first person shooter + controller = gross. (I must say, though, Doom and Doom II have always handled much better with a gamepad for some reason.)

Beyond having problems like this from time to time, I think my PC's a quality gaming platform. I've only sunk about two or three hundred dollars into it as far as tooling it up for gaming is concerned (an amount of money that's almost certainly been reneged by the lower cost of most PC games when compared with their console counterparts), and it runs pretty much anything I want it to. On top of that, I can play FPSs with proper controls, damn it!

P. S. - I wonder if kontrolfreek's speedfreek would make the controls for FPSs on the 360 any more tolerable...

That's sorta the definition of overrated.
Anyway, I haven't gotten it yet, but I liked the demo.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

lol

I think it looks pretty cool, but I have neither a good PC or a 360. If its as good as it sounds, I'm sure my friend has it, I'll have to over to his house and try it if he does.

Meh, I dank around with it at BestBuy the other day. Nothing special, definitely not something I'd rush out and buy for my 360. Maybe when it hits the bargain bin or something. Besides, I've got my hands full with MGS Portable Ops right now!

You must have raced through it as quickly as possible then.
