I live out in the middle of nowhere. No one has high speed internet out here, so i cant really use someonelses. lol im at 24 kbps

you could try modem bonding if your os and isp support it. hope you have two phone lines!

You might see if you can get microwave dish based internet. They used to have that in my area, but I'm not sure about now. You put up a small wire dish and point it at the source tower. I think it toped out at ~128K, but that was a few years ago in the rural area here.

If you have good cellphone reception, you could see about getting data plan with 'tethering', and you could hook that up to your computer.

Also, AT&T and Sprint are expanding their DSL coverage to include increasingly rural areas. My aunt has DSL, and a few years ago you couldn't even get a full 56K connection there. Call different phone companies, or check their websites.

Sure that's great for serial communication, but we're talking about the internet here. Ethernet protocol requires at least 8 wires, each of which is '2-way.' That's a lot of lasers. Lost packets (or 'found' ones) would be a problem.
I guess you could have a dedicated PC that sends information over a serial interface... but then you're back to dial-up speeds

My cousin was also in the "middle of nowhere" predicament. He got AT&T cellphone internet or something for his laptop; they gave him a wireless card to plug into his laptop, and anywhere there is cellphone service he can use the internet. Might be worth looking into.
