Dc Laptop\Portable - New plans, and I ran outa cash.

Here are my thoughts, DC laptop is hard to make, but if you are willing to try go for it. And also, GD-ROM drive is big and noisy and clunky, if you want you can replace the drive with one from a Portable CD player to save space and make it less noisy. But then you won't be able to boot retail games, only homebrews and backups.

Could you take just the laser from the GD-ROM drive and transplant it to the CD player drive?

How long should 2 rc car battery's get me of play? It will have the dc, 1 fan, and a joytech 7" ps2 screen. Any idea if 2 battery's will give me 2-3 hours of play time?

Go with the second link. You only need 7.2v not 9.6v.

As for the time you would get out of it. Hard to say, most of those on the site use the PSone screen, so we can assume that a 7" will consume 1 amp per hour. And I think Dkap01 got his Dreamcast portable to run for little over two hours.

Keep in mind that when you do connect the screen to the Dreamcast you should mod the screen to use LEDs. They'll cut the power usage almost in half. This will help squeeze an extra 10-30 minutes out of the batteries.

hmm im not to big of a fan of thiss new concept the mouse wouldve been cool to play rez with. if i were to make a dc laptop i would just squeeze in a trackball or something also its going to look really awkwar the way your having it, but im probably wrong sso ignore me

Thanks Not to sure if I'll even sell it or not, It will be fun to show off to people, and play . It will cost me around $300 to build which ain't to bad. well $300 without the case. The guy that had a CNC machine just sold it out of the blue last night so I'm probably gonna get someone on the forums to vacform my case, which would probably look nicer, seeing as it will then be curvy

Sadly I have to pull the plug for now I don't have good enough funds for it yet, but I really hope that I will be able to get the cash for this. I am getting a new dreamcast, and am going to use the old 1 for this laptop, but I still cant get a screen, or a case, probably gonna see if I can get someone to vac-form one after/if I end up being able to get the cash for it. plus my idea's will go threw some serious work first, and the system will be slimmed down allot, a 3.4" tall laptop would be a little bit odd... So I'm going to try to slim it down as much as possible, and there is a chance I may make a portable instead, seeing as the online dreamcast servers are all off now anyway a portable would be better in a way, plus the screen would be cheaper.

Well what do you guys think, laptop or portable?

Also with a portable if I made one I could still add my modem if I wanted to use it. A portable with a internet connection would be odd, but if there's room why the heck not right? What if I had it and got stranded somewhere without a phone but there was a random phone line, I could email for help. lol

Prices for me to build it would be...

Laptop- $175
Portable- $75

^^That is if nothing goes wrong while making it. That would be the cheapest price, not counting wire/tact switches and things.
