Coilguns will never be as powerful as real guns. The best ones I've seen that are under 20 pounds are only as strong as a BB Gun. Also, 30 caps might have a discharge rate of too much, which will pull the bearing BACKWARDS into the tube, potentially firing everything backwards. Do lots of research, there's plenty out there.

Search hack-a-day. Some guy made a really good handheld one.

That's just creepy! You creep!

The one I made that worked kind of good went as follows:

- Take a pen tube that fits your ferromagnetic projectile (longer the better, I think, but balls work fine)
- Get a high gauge enameled wire and wrap it around the tube many, many times, in about an inch-long space. It should be nice and fat.
- Attach the caps, hope for the best.

With amateur coilguns, it's a guessing game. It's very sensitive, and a timing system for the start and stop of the discharge will be neccesary to achieve good results. I had a really good site but I forget it now. It didn't work for me, but I didn't have a timer and had much less farads than I should have.

Anyways, that site used 16-22 gauge wire. I didn't see less that 22. If I remember correctly, the one I made (That didn't quite work, but the site seemed to plan it out well) used 20 gauge wire, 19 turns per layer for 22 layers.

The name just came to me:

http://mgc314.home.comcast.net/

Magnetic Gun Club. Awestuff stuff, check it out, definitely, if you want to make a coilgun.

It has many MANY MMAAAANY tools and resources. It just might be the only one you need.

For example:

http://mgc314.home.comcast.net/opticoilarray1.htm

Has a list of computer-generated coil setups.

You should look for something in the 300 volts range.

I can't really tell you much more than what that site says. I never built one successfully.

If I had that many cameras, I'd try to go about making a video with some kind of bullet-time effect. :D
