where the heck did ya hear that MS bought the rights to OOo? ive never heard of that and the only corp logo i see on openoffice.org is sun and thats understandable since its the os version of a sun product. and even if this were true thers still star office which is what OOo is based on and is free to students or $80 for a home liscense.

Microsoft made a deal with Sun Microsystems around September 16, 2004.

Dude nowhere in that article does it say MS bought the rights to OOo. they couldnt even if they wanted to since all the OOo developers and sun own the copyrights and that is a deal between ms an dsun alone.oh and if you do some more research its just you'll see its just a way for ms to protect thier patents they cant just go sueing everyone that uses OOo. besides its not real threat if it were OpenOffice.org 2.0 wouldnt be on the way.

The deal between Sun and MS is sooooo over-exagerated, like most press. Granted, we're allowed a very healthy dose of skepticism/paranoia when MS buys *anything* these days, but still. They cant stop the momentum behind OOo, thats the real beauty in community projects (open source). It wouldnt matter in the slightest if they did manage to shut it down through some legal nonsense. It'd just spawn a new project with a new name that handles the same functionality. This is why Microsoft is doomed.
