Question about installing a new OS

Post by ganonbanned »

Hello,
I got a new PC I will be using for a countertop arcade cabinet, it is an internet-cafe style PC, and I have a question. It has windows 2000 installed on it, and I want to get something else on it, but it has no CD drive, and Im not getting one just to install a new OS. Is there anyway I can get one? I have internet access on it.

You could borrow a CD drive from another computer...

I don't think there's any way to boot it off a disc image, so temporarily transplanting an optical drive from another PC is the easiest solution.

If you can get something like GRUB installed, you can add an entry for your iso using a few "tricks." If you could elaborate on the OS you want to install, I could formulate a way using grub to install that OS.

Yes you can boot from a floppy, but it won't do you any good if you have no CD drive to install Windows from. :P

If he could boot from USB he could boot into DOS then install XP that he ripped to the USB device.

Using either a DVD/CD-ROM that is USB, a USB hard drive, a USB flash drive, take your pick. Before you can even do this, check the BIOS and see if there is an option to boot via USB, if so move it to the top of the list.
