Noob question about LAN

ok, im making plans for 2 doom arcade cabs, so I can play 2 player. I am using MAMEwah, can I just plug an ethernet cord in to one from the other, and play on an LAN?

Either need one crossover cable, you then plug one end into each computer (only works with two computers) or you need a hub and two regular cables, PC- cable- hub- cable- PC.

some network admin at my school told me that newer network cards have the ability to detect how they are hooked up and swap their tx/rx pins at will, thus making crossover cables obsolete...

can anyone verify this?

Yep, I actually have seen this, couldn't tell you an actual model that provides this capability though.

Yea, but I bet his computers are rather old. I would highly recommend a cheap router, or wireless router. They will auto assign IP addresses and makes setup a breeze. I've got a wireless card in my arcade cabinet so that I can remote control it, or copy new stuff to it no matter where it is sitting. I only have the one power cord from an "internal" surge protector that sticks out of the cabinet. I'm thinking of installing a small USB hub to give myself external access for USB devices as well. That would be nice.
