I just finished watching "Muppet Family Christmas". The whole special, not the one they release on tape and DVD in the US and Canada. (They had to cut several musical numbers due to licensing issues.) It's actually a DVD that was made of a VHS recording form 1987, recorded off an antenna with a 2 head VCR. Oddly enough it's clearer than the VHS we bought a few years ago!

Only have the DVD? I'm sorry. Here's some of what you're missing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpyAZyQhAe8 - Home movie scene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGS2oaqDUvQ - Why the snowman is suddenly alive in the edited version
Sorry about the video quality.

If you search around YouTube enough you will probably find the full version broken up into YouTube-size pieces.

Here's another Christmas classic: How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This really, REALLY looks like the Tex Avery cartoon it is. (Look at some of the Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry cartoons of the time. His cartooning style was definitely distinct.)

9 days left? CRAP I need to start wrapping stuff!

Anyone notice that every year Santa needs some sort of help, otherwise Christmas is ruined? Is Santa just unlucky or just stupid that he needs help every year?

"Father Christmas" died in Essex, in 1554, or something like that, might of been 1556.

What, you expected him to buy everything?

Sure, Santa owns most of the northern polar ice cap, and he could have mortgaged it, but he traded most of it to kids in exchange for box tops back in the 60s. Even if he still owned and mortgaged the land, it would only tide Santa over for about 20 Christmases before he'd be back in the hole again.

"What about the elves? Don't they make the toys?" you ask? Well, they used to be able to produce toys that would satisfy the children, back in the days where toys were simple and cheap to produce. However, thanks to mass marketing and the Happy Meal, children have developed a need for shiny, cheaply made name-brand action figures, toy guns, and electronic games. Now, Santa doesn't own any sweatshops in third world countries, and the elves unionized back in 1983, so each toy would cost approximately $85.52 to produce, including the supplies, licensing fees, and elfin benefit packages. Multiply that by 3 billion (a rough guess to the number of children in the world), and you wind up with a load of cash that has to come from somewhere. So, Santa decided to bite the bullet and have every parent chip in $20 or so, so he can buy the high-profile trinkets children demand in bulk, straight from the manufacturers. This economical measure allows all the children to get what they want, with minimal impact to the fat man's wallet.

But how does he pay for all the elves, who have now become in-house accountants, consultants, and lawyers? (Think "Elfin Dilbert".) Easy. Santa sold out to the Coca-Cola Company back in 1931. The cash they pay him for the use of his image mroe than covers the operating costs of the office (formerly known as the workshop). All the other Santa decorations you see are ripoffs, made without his consent. However, Santa doesn't mind. In an interview, he said Coca-Cola only pays him because he has to work with polar bears. Santa is quoted to have said "They'll kill you if you even look at them wrong. The money is merely compensation for psychological trauma and the occasional stray tranquilizer dart. HO! HO! HO!".

That's what Christmas is all about today, Charlie Brown. Economics.

Bicostp, stop sugar coating it. We all know that Santa's a slave driver. Elves happily making toys for children all year, please. Santa's kept them in line for centuries and I don't think he'd tolerate them unionizing. Even if they did he'd likely execute a handful as an example to the others that such ideals are not going to be accepted by the jolly fat man.

After all Santa's likely really bent, his home at the North Pole has been flooded for years now. There is no North Pole, where it was there now is a lake. Even more reason for Santa to be dismissive to his duty to spread Christmas joy for one night a year.

Too true, and it usually continues until about a month after Christmas, when everyone remembers to change them.

As I explained further up, Santa died almost 500 years ago, in the mid-sixteenth century.
