Notes on N64 Jumper Pack

Post by evildragon »

This some notes on the jumper pack, incase anyone was wondering about it..

It is nothing.. Nothing at all.. I took it apart, and not a single chip on it, all it does is act as a "jumper"... (hence it's called that!)

I am stating this, as it seems some people are selling the jumper pack saying it has memory in it, this is NOT true at all.. Being the N64 is RAMBUS memory, and technically has two bays (one being soldered permanently), it needs a jumper, as one bank can NOT be empty.. Same thing applies to a PC with a Pentium 4 and a RAMBUS memory...

For anyone modding a N64 into a smaller unit, with this information, if you don't need the expansion pack, you might be able to remove the socket altogether, and permanently "jumper" the connection..

Are all connections jumped, or just 1 or 2?

There are some caps on it also, anyways, I just cut mine down whenever I'm going for size.

Are you sure they are caps? While, I haven't seen the inside of the jumper pack, naturally I'd think they were pull-up/down resistors.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

theres a bunch of caps for decoupling (that may have been left out on later revisions?)

there are also 12 pullup resisotrs on the data lines, you need those.

Here's a picture of the jumper pack..

While I can not test the caps, the resistors have about 52 to 54 ohm readings on my multimeter..

well don't forget about people like me who actually want the ram expansion...

So in that case, I would say just to cut it down, or fork over decent money for a weller Iron and relocate it...

oh i got my expansion pack, but im sure some people (for whatever reason they would), would rather not have the expansion pack.. (im sure it takes up some power, and it does generate some heat---atleast mine does)..

I once borrowed an expansion pack to play Donkey Kong 64. After realizing it wasn't THAT good a game, I gave it back.

One game that I know of, that really uses the extra RAM, is Perfect Dark..

how do you cut it down without damaging it, just take out the screws and take off the plastic?

Thats all I did. Theres some metal plates on it, but they are only a bit bigger so i just left them and wrapped it in electrical tape.
