Unix
Ive been running Linux for as long as I can remember. Well actually since I was 5 before that my dad said the family's computer was dos based. I am familiar with unix. But I dont have a computer that it is installed on. So I know theres Netbsd openbsd and freebsd. Which one is better. And also I heard that slackware is the most unix like linux.

SuSE is great for me. good interface (though it's basically a slightly modified version of KDE) and a lot of good programs are included. Also, it uses YaST, an awesome installer for a lot of stuff.

Ok break down of what Free, Net and Open's advanages are. FreeBSD is the more main stream of the three it also supports more of the main stream platforms. NetBSD is the porter, they support like 50+ platforms and is from the looks of it very flexible. OpenBSD which is based off Net focuses on security.
All seem very good, and so you know FreeBSD also has more online documentation and books to read on it then the other two.
And as all three are free, its up to you to decide which is best. Note that you need atleast 4mb ram to run Free.

It really does depend on RAM quite a bit, as gannon mentioned. I would recommend getting 128MB. If you have 64, you might be able to get by with it. Try it out and see if it's fast enough. As for the distro, I would try SuSE to start, since it's good for beginners and still has good functionalities. 9.1 would probably be ok. If it's too slow, try 8.1. If that's too slow, then Red Hat is probably your best bet. I believe I have used Red Hat 9 on a PII 333, 96MB RAM, but I don't remember how it was. Red Hat 8 should be fine if that is too slow. Keep in mind that I have had trouble gtting RH to work with my network card.gotchocolatemilk2 wrote:does anyone know what would be the best linux to run on a 400mhz pentium 2 machine?

As for a distro to use. Yes it depends on Ram more than Processor speed. Linux isnt widows and so doesnt hog resources. Most distros will work with as little as 4mb but you cant use a GUI (Graphical User Iterface), to use a GUI atleast 35mb is needed and for that use a simple on like blackbox or fluxbox as KDE and Gnome use more ram.
