high def pictures. dialup bad. (approx. 700k total)

Post by timmeh87 »

ok so ever since we got a *real* digital camera i wanted to take good pictures of my portable to make up for those crappy webcam ones.

these pictures are shrunk to 800x600 for benheck, but i have much higer quality ones...

if sam says its ok to upload 10 megs of pictures, then i would throw them on the wiki all fancy like. for now im too lazy. i just shrunk them as i uploaded them.... (woo imageshack)

---------------------

so first we start with the front view. see how far the cartridge sticks out on the right? thats about how long it will be on either side.
Image

and this is the back, as far as i can take it apart without a screwdriver. the cart slot appears a little crooked in this picture, but its on semi-flexible brackets, so that is easily corrected. the brackets are quite strong, and easily take the insertion force required to put the cart in. they are made out of soft iron, soldered to the stock steel shielding in places. you can see the heatsink under the cart slot is held down indirectly by the screws holding down the shielding. the expansion pack's heatsink is held on with a piece of copper wire. my freind has arctic silver he will lend me, but for now im just using the stock grey pads.
Image

controller, cart, and one battery in place.
Image

i used enameled wire for this, i find it mich easier to work with than IDE cable.
Image

you can see that the result is quite clean XD
Image

here we see how i recycled some metal i found inside the original case as mounting brackets for the LCD screen. i had to cut a chunk of the LCD bard away so it would fit like it is.
Image

and a closeup of the expansion pack. enameled wire, covered in several layers of clear nail polish. its not pretty, but it works.
Image

this is mounted right where the old power connector used to be. you can see the trim pot i have to adjust the 3.3v line's voltage.
Image

its about 2 inches thick.
Image

this is how close the boards are together... the cable in the background is the A/V to the screen. right now this space is empty, but later i want to find some foam or something to stuff in here. ive already had problems with some of the higher components touching each other.
Image

proof that it works :D

What kind of wire did you use for the relocations?

'red' and 'green' enameled copper wire. i got them at radioshack, along with a thicker spool of 'clear'.. iirc, they are all 2 AWG guages apart, but darned if i remember exactly which guages. i think green is somewhere between 26 and 30 and red is 2 less than that...

Finally someone shows their jump pack relocation. For that, I just used thin thin IDE cable.

i love it. the enamel melts off with the heat from an iron (i think mine is 40W), so you dont need to strip it or anything (although tinning it beforehand is still useful). you need lots of flux though.

You said that the enameled wire wasn't "pretty", but I'd have to disagree, I think it looks great. The whole project looks awesome.

I will finish at least one portable before I start another...

it looks good, but if your game is going out at the right hand side it might be uncomfortable to hold but still awsome work :D

My dial-up modem just coughed up some blood.

But awesome job on everything! I am especially impressed by the expansion pack rewiring. You're the soldering king.
