The SNES has been overclocked

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

The SNES has been overclocked

Post by warmachine »

And it wasn't as hard as we thought.

Here it is.

Mr. Ivy states that it is glitchy, but he simply needs a slower oscillator then the 31MHz one he found. Apparently, the CPU divides the oscillator speed by 6 to obtain the ultimate clock speed.
Robert Ivy Said wrote:This CPU is manufactured by Ricoh, and is a modified version of the WDC 65c816 that runs at a maximum speed of 3.58 MHz (software selectable multiplier). We will be going by the maximum speed for sake of confusion ;). The SNES's cpu internally divides whatever clock it recieves by 6, in this case, it recieves a 21.477 MHz clock signal. What we are going to do is disconnect the 21 MHz signal, and connect a 31 MHz crystal oscillator resulting in a maximum speed of 5.1 MHz! Quite a speed boost!
Whip out your SNESes and give it a try. If you have RC cars and/or their remotes, gut their oscillators if they fall between 21 and 31MHz.

PS - if you have oscillators between 21 and 31MHz, this guy is looking for some to test out a better overclock.

Wow, I guess Epicenter got beaten to it!

EDIT: Nevermind.

Epicenter and Rob Ivy both work together. Mr. Ivy is the hardware guy and Epicenter is (usually) the one to make the website about the mod.

He emailed me about me about my SuperFX overclocking, wonder if he still remembers it...

Who? Epicenter? I've been talking to the guy, and I did a Genesis 2 overclock. He's writing an article for Retro Gamer [Magazine] and I took the pictures for it. So for all you readers, look out for my pictures in the next issue!

It's good to know that it's possible, and it's wonderful to know that it's hinges on an oscillator.

So who's going to be the first person to have an overclocked SNES and an overclocked FX chipped game?

what would be the overall benefit of overclocking the SNES?

I know the fx 3de ran a few more fps but the snes mobo seemed to run very well as is...

The builtin slow-mo feature the SNES had was a result of the limited clock speed. You overclock the CPU you can have smoother graphics, no lagging, other things like that.

Hey Skyone, did you ever get a new N64 from the failed overclocking attempt you did?
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

2 actually :P. One for my portable N64 (coming soon) and one to overclock. And yes, I ended up successfully overclocking it this time.

There's the near-final N64 overclocking, even though pins look bridged, they aren't. I also put some hot glue to hold down the wires and pins.

Anywho, I tried the SNES overclocking, and it worked PERFECTLY until I turned it on. Link was flying across the screen in more than a katrillion directions. I need a smaller clock rate..
