Gamecube Screen Question

Gamecube Screen Question

I'm goning to use that screen instead of the Psone screen. Now i have an idea. Everyone thinks the screen uses 12 volts because that's what the Gamecube uses. Right? Look at this.

The power goes into that.
I'm pretty sure that the regulator, inductor, and capacitors shown are all used to step down the volts (am i right?). Except for that little chip below the inductor. No idea what that is. Any way, I'm using a 9.6 v battery and the screen is running fine. Now i've herd that the regulator is only 30% effective, while a dc-dc converter is 90% effective. would i be able to replace the regulator with a dc-dc converter to make it more energy efficiant? Or do you think i'd be ok putting the 9.6 directly to the screen, or is that too risky?

Edit: shoot. put it in wrong place. can someone please transplant this?

what screen are you using (verge? intec? zenith?) if it's verge or zenith, 9.6v is a bit too much

Sorry, its Verge. So your saying 9.6 is too much? I tried hooking 7.2 v into the plug and that was too little. 9.6 into the plug was enough. I'm thinking maybe 7.2 was too low to activate it?

What if i hooked 7.2 up right to the screen.

if you feed the dc-dc convertor 7.2v, it's too little. if you give the dc-dc convertor 9.6v, it's good. if you give the screen 7.2v, it's good but if you give it 9.6v, it's too much. hope that clears it up

Wait a tick. How do people who use 7.2v batteries use a dc-dc converter then?

they don't use it to get 7.2v for the screen. they use it for other stuff like 3.3v for N64s

Well yeah I did mean the 3.3 line. I'm looking at the PT78HT233 http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/p ... ht233.html and that has the min. in at 9.
