nope, just a wire connected to one end, and then that wire to ground (since the cap is between the pin on the chip and ground).
a variable resistor might be useful, though...perhaps a trimmer of some sort...

Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

hm i dunno if it would work thats just what i thought you were doing for some reason.
anyways, since the pin originally had a cap on it, i dont know if tying it to ground like that is a very good idea. the cap didnt allow current to flow through it. a wire does. does it make a difference? maybe. if i ever tried this, id try to stick a different value cap in there rather than just short it out like that.
i dunno. maybe thats why the screen gets meassed up?

sounds like it
.....I think that since all the current is allowed through, it overloads some internal part of the chip and screws it up so the lines appear. I wonder why this has never happened before it happened to Turbo Tax and me
....
I suppose it's too late now for me, though, if there is a screwed up component in there...perhaps I could just replace that whole chip, but I'm not up for some really fine SMT desoldering/soldering right now
...In fact, I'm NEVER up for soldering like that!

well, problem solved...kind of.
anyway, I found an old screen that was thought to be broken...it had a bunch of smt caps and resistors an what not removed from near the "brightness cap", meaning I probably used it a while ago to replace parts for other screens. Anyway, I tried the screen, it didn't turn on....So, I replaced the 7805s and it worked...kind of. A good 5 smt parts were missing, so I had to desolder them from the screwed up screen (damn lines!) and solder them onto the old screen (this was pretty hard
...). Anyway, after that, the video was working, but on the side it was kind of fuzzy
. So, I decided to poke around a bit with a licked finger...I actually found a spot in the upper left corner, near a chip, where it seemed to fix it, but I tried shorting every smt component near there and it was still there. I replaced the crystal, and then, er, unreplaced it (used the old one).
Finally, somehow, the "fuzziness" on the side went away. But now it was in black and white....well, that was easy to fix. I simply had the one cap for the s-video mod disconnected on one side. Problem solved.
But then (oh no!) new problem! A few millimeter sized white border on the same side as the fuzziness....well, that one got me going for a good 20 minutes....I tried everything again, licking, checking my soldering, and finally, I realized that a little smt LED in the top right corner was turning it on...I got mad at the LED, and promptly removed it with my pliers. I turn on the screen, the GC...and everything's fine
. After an hour and a half or so of soldering and troubleshooting, I found myself a new, good screen
. I had the brightess cap in, and since it was bright enough with that, I left it. I would hate to have gone through all this....just to get....another screen....with those f***ing lines!
Anyway, I'm going to sleep now...my legs are sore and so is my back (and I've got a damn burn on my finger...3rd degree
) so I need to just rest.

eh, I'm used to it
...troubleshooting my ass off until I fix something...it leads to late nights, backaches, and headaches, but I got a whole <s>new</s> screen to use
!!
besides, I really want to play LoZ: OoT on my GCp
...and WW, too.
I was replaying them both when...the tragedy happened

i think there could be an easy fix for this, i just started to get these lines on my screen, and i remember marshall saying something about placing an inductor in series with the input of the regulator. i tried this and no more lines. i switched to using a DC-DC converter though but it is probably worth a shot if you are using a 7808. unless somebody can tell me i am being stupid for thinking it will work with a 7808
