ok, new update....
last night, while frustrated trying to figure this problem out, I quit working on it and let it sit over night (not on, sillies

...) with the brightness cap NOT shorted. I turned it on today and no lines on the screen! of course, it wasn't as bright....so, I think it may have something to do with some internal clock or something (not to tell time, but for the lcd) anyway, perhaps it got reset or something, so it works fine now. I'm debating whether or not I should do the brightness mod again (even if it's only for a quick second!) because I'd hate to have to let it sit for a while to check up on it again.
either way, at least I know that this problem IS beatable/fixable!
what I'll probably do is just finish the GCp and have a switch go to the cap. and ground, and I'll try it later tonight or something.
Edit: well, I did the brightness mod (jumped the cap.) and it turns out that it was just too dark to be noticeable

. anyway, I've found a decent compromise. I have the brightness mod on, but turn it down to a reasonable level to get the lines out. It's actually not too dark, and definitely useable

. Of course, if I can't see something, I'll just turn up the brightness and deal with the lines for a little

.
