ok i dont understand anything that has to do with the dc-dc converter so to power an n64 could i have 3 1.2v batteries =3.6v for the cpu and add a separate 7.2 volts for the rest of the system?

Er, no you can't use resistors as a power supply, they're too unreliable. Use a DC/DC converter. Here's a diagram from Sky's site:

You can get the DC/DC converter free from TI, don't overuse it this though. Check his site for more details, since it explains this pretty well. Go to diagrams, then scroll to the bottom.

HOTLINKER!
Haha, it's ok, I have unmetered bandwidth.
But ya: http://skytroniks.com/index.php?mode=diagrams
Check the 3rd picture down, and read underneath it.
EDIT: You can have another 3 volt battery, but why bother when you can use the free samples from TI?

im goona atleast try!... is 3.6 really too much?
how about 3.6 and a resistor? that DC-DC stuff is too technical........
....i suck at anything harder than a regulator

dude, i have personally used 3 AAs to power the 3.3v line with no problems aside form poor battery life BE WARNED overvolting by more than 3.6v will likely KILL your n64
