It's more shallow then that. The parents don't want to be labled as negligent or non-involved parents. Think of it, it's easier to say "VIDEO GAMES DID IT TO OUR SWEET CHILD!", than "Yeah we didn't bother to pay attention to what our kid did, we were to busy ignoring them to bother."

Well, I think this is a good idea. Sparkfist raisies a good point about movie ratings being hidden on boxes; however, movie-based media is far larger than video games, so movies are widely advertised with a certain rating. Plus, they have age limits at theaters and the rating is very clearly posted on signs and whatnot. Personally, I feel this idea would rating awareness in parents, especially with all the asswipe games that shouldn't be marketed *cough* GTA *couhg*

The ESRB is a bit vague with the rating systems. Maybe going with the European rating system could work out. Its colorfull, higher on the packaging, and it clearly shows the proper age group (My Shenmue II euopean copy is rated 11+, much clearer than "T")

I can argue this point. I know some people that have kids and they will not let then see PC=13 movies and the father doesn't play Lesure Suit Larry if his kids are around. So you're comment is not shared by everyone.

This is a discussion on wheather or not the current rating system is working to protect younger kids from getting their hands on things that are not appropiate. We don't have flaming now and the cold truth is you're the only person that really has posted any spam as of yet in this thread.

The problem lies mostly in the parents. From what I have seen, they will buy anything for their kids if they whine, cry, and Finster about it for long enough, just to pacify them so they can hear their cell phone conversations. (OK so amybe not the phone part, but the first part is true.) They don't care who the game is geared for, all they care about is "if I buy this for the kid they'll shut up and be happy". Really this is wrong. I acted out in the store like that once. ONCE. My mom left the cart at the customer service desk, brought me out to the car, and I got SUCH a yelling-at!

I wasn't allowed to go to the store for a couple months! And keep in mind I as 2 or so...

I think parents are afraid to dicipline their kids today or something...

I have an idea that will fix the whole problem. Just do away with ratings systems alltogether and when parents come up whining " little jonny played grand theft auto for 72 hours straight then went to the mall and killed a dozen people, I wanna sue the company" we lock the parents up for 72 years for being bad parents and buying jonny a game without doing the reasearch on the game first and letting the kid be obsessive about it. Geesh make your kids go out and play in the sun once in a while. Sit down and have a meal as a family, do anything to be involved in the kids life instead of expecting a 200 dollar piece of technology to be a babysitter for you so you don't have to deal with them.

p.s. sorry for the rant

Gamer2, you haven't met my mom...believe me....I wanted to buy the Warriors (movie), and she first borrowed it from a friend, watched it herself and regulated the 'safeness' of it.....since only like 2 f-words, I could see it, through stern talking.

In game, she takes the thing and reads the rating, and then the back, and she always sees the back if a ESRB lettter is missing....*sigh* so close to GTA, yet so far (I haven't/never played GTA cept the first one....)
