I've begun working on my ps2 portable again, but I'm not sure what the minimum voltage is since I don't have a working one at the moment. I'm hoping that I can run it off of at least 11V, but I'm not sure if it'll work right.
Also, I might have to make a custom heatsink for it. I plan on trying to get one as thin as possible, but have it extend throughout most of the motherboard.
I'm slowly starting to get equipment to help me solder the leads for the laser. But I think I might have to make a custom soldering tip.

What dimensions does the heatsink need to be?

I'm thinking it'll be around 9x5x0.25

Yeah, I meant inches, and I had the dimensions slightly off also.
The dimmensions I'm going for are 9.5"x5.655"x0.25". Also, I'll be making a 5.62"x4.705" hole in the middle for the lcd and its controller card.

I'll probably also cut a little away from where I put the controller.

Not really, it will be all internal, and if I make it out of aluminum it should only weigh 4.48 oz.
Also, I think that I might include a small fan, hopefully one that's less than an inch.

I thought that would be the actual unit, excluding controls!

I was thinking of making it a ps2 style case with all the grooves in it, but I think that I'll just make it smooth, although I might make some sort of discrete hole system to let heat out since I don't want to put up a mesh screen or anything ugly like that

after looking through the past gamesx updates I noticed that there was this page listed at the bottom. I really wished that they listed this in the controller section. It helps a bit, but it doesn't matter much since I was going to keep the original button contacts anyways.

I'm finally at the point of designing the case where I have 2 different rough models.
One is a gba style case with the dvd drive on the back in the middle, while the other is a gb style case with the dvd drive on the top under the screen.

Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. The gba style has a lower center of gravity and has a sleaker design, but I then have to relocate the dvd drive, which is incredibally hard and I need to build a custom heatsink.
With the gb style case I don't need to relocate the dvd drive, and it uses the standard heatsink, but it doesn't have the same low center of gravity and isn't all that sleak.

I'd suggest the GB design. I know with the GBA you'd get the experiance of modding the dvd-rom and making the heat-sink. I just believe with a project its best to get the thing working quickly, then change it later.

Still its up to you, I wish you luck on finishing the project.

you can do the gba style with out relocating the dvd drive or buliding anew heat sink but you would just have to re think it a bit cus i'm sure you can have you cake and play finalfantsy on it too

If I didn't relocate the dvd drive and I used the gba setup, the center of gravity wouldn't be in the center, and the unit would be a lot heavier on one side than the other.
