it's a rubber pad..mine's pretty worn down now (doesn't click like before) so it's probably a rubber pad. might still be dirty under there, or a trace is broken
. best thing to do is just open it up, troubleshoot, and keep trying to fix it 'till it's...fixed

Why don't you buy a new one? Maybe a Lite? Go to Gamestop, sell your broken one but don't tell them it's broken! It'll sell for about 50 US dollars. I know it's not a lot.
(Which is why I never sold mine. I wanted a PSP but it was only because sony had my mind in theire control.)
Or paint it, make it look cool and trade with a friend for a regualar one!
