Finally! NES expansion port info!!!

Post by CronoTriggerfan »

Well, I found out what the NES expansion port was going to be used for! According to http://www.game-machines.com/consoles/nes.php , Nintendo had plans to develop a multiplayer tap for the system, but it was never released. Is this accurate?

Yes, I've heard about it before. It would let you link and play wirelessly with seperate NES-es and TVs. The only game that used it was built in to the accessory. It was some asteroids-like ripoff.

actually, the 4 player adapter for the nes was released, never used the exp. port though.
If you're just finding out about the uses of the port you're a bit late :P
Anyways, you can even use the port to pause games that don't even have pause features.

Ya, I guess I'm a little slow at discovering this kinda stuff... And yes, I am a HUGE Bruce Lee fan! He's the reason I started doing martial arts! And Gannon, I was mistaken in my wording... the expansion port attachment is not meant as a multitap, but to link several NES systems wirelessly, I believe.

Games like from what I hear....Excitebike, River City Ransom, you can force pause those games.

In ASM (the language the nes runs on) theres a opcode called NMI IIRC, on the exp. port there is a pin to send NMI signals to the nes so you can (pretty sure) pause the nes by pulling it to something (haven't looked at the schematics closely, probably ground though)

Really the unreleased NES disk drive is the only thing that used the Expansion port. And to explain why the NES version never came out was that the Japanese kind of failed. In Japan people were making copies of games off the Famicom disk drive floppies. As the U.S. was the computer place in the '80s they couldn't release something like that it would just cost them more lost money.

I think the unlreased N64 DD was just crap. I would have been interested in seeing what they had for that, as the only game I heard they offered was a N64 vesrion of Mario Paint. But sill to just not even try.

Every thing else on the list were just things Nintedo licensed. How do I know, there is no GameGenie, so it's obvious that they're only licensed accessories.
