Ok first off I have yet to try this (hopefully soon I will though) and am not sure if everything is hooked up right in my diagram. I chose to go with a Li-Ion battery because to get the required 3 volts, you'd need at least 2 Ni-MH batteries.
The Battery should be a small, low capacity Li-Ion or other small battery that will fit into a SNES case (plenty of room in there though, so go wild).
My only concern is that Li-Ion can only be recharged about 500 times.
One last note:
If I ever do succesfully complete this mod, I will bump this topic with a How-to complete with pictures of my hands!
Note: Pin 5 is ground and Pin 58 is +5V.
Perhaps this battery with a protection circuit (which is one inch at it's maximum length) would suffice.
i thin he wants to put some li-ions in his snes carts? it might work but i think it would be pretty useless because in 10 years who knows were the cart will be? funny thing i found when changing the batteries in my snes carts, if you change them fast enought the data will not be erased it doesnt really matter i guess because if you are changing the batteryu there would be no save yay or my useless ramblings

I think he wants to put a li-ion to replace the current coin battery of a game, and wire it up so that when it's plugged into the snes it gets charged.
A few problems I see, mainly that you'd need a charging circuit too and a way to cut of power to the battery but not the ICs when it's fully charged.
Why don't you just sacrifice your current game save and just replace the battery inside? It only takes 10 minutes and you get another good 10 years. I did it on my Pokemon Gold cart, and I've already gotten a battery for when my EB cart dies.

I didn't know that the battery actually did something! When I found out it was an internal clock, I though it told time!

How game saves are stored: there's an IC inside the SNES cart that has some SRAM in it. Just like RAM for your computer. If you turn your computer off (ie, deplete the power source), then the RAM data is gone. Same with an SNES cart. The battery is there to keep the SRAM alive. Once you disconnect the battery, the SRAM is gone. Although, I heard somewhere that it might be like a BIOS chip where the data stays in there for like 30 seconds after you unpower it. So if you wanna go through the trouble of trying to save it, just rip out the battery and replace it quickly That rumor is probably false, though.
Edit: You don't need a gamebit either, my pair of needlenose pliers work awesome for opening SNES, N64, and GB games.
If you're smart you just have to hook up a 3V source to the battery spots before replacing the battery and remove them when done so your game doesn't reset.
Of course, if you take too long there's a risk of damaging the battery
